Just got a new set of picks!

Just picked up a Southord C1510 set last week and wow what a difference compared to my FPS-8 from lockpicktools.com

The feedback is quit different then my little pocket set. I find it much easier picking with these tools than the little fold out
pick set, not to mention they feel great in the hand. One thing I might end up doing to them is either rounding the edges or
creating some kind of softer handle, but all in all I'm loving this set and definitely recommend it to anyone starting out!

I only started lock picking at the beginning of this year its been a skill Iv wanted to learn for awhile and finally decided to do it.
So far iv picked all the house door locks, a Leader lock iv had lying around, a master lock 120, and master lock no5.

Iv been thinking of picking up one of these http://www.learnlockpicking.com/ as my next challenge. I think I'm ready to move
to locks with security pins and I'm looking for a new challenge. If you guys can recommend any other locks that you might think
are a good choice that be great!

First off as you will be told numerous times in other posts. Don't pick locks in use. It's too easy to break them or break the pick off in them. It's Murphy's law. You may never have a pick break until the first time you try to pick a lock in use then all off a sudden you here a snap. As far a a lock to move up to for security pins. I would go to the Schlage. They sell it at home depot and lowes and it isn't too expensive so its a decent choice.

The Schlage will provide better and more realistic tolerances. Most practice locks are really easy to pick and you'll get bored of them pretty quickly. This was my experience, at least. I'd also recommend a Kwikset double sided deadbolt. They're great for practice and easy to disassemble/repin/etc.

Ahh that makes perfect sense =) I was just looking at the Kwikset's in Homedepot nice prices. By double sided I assume you mean the key controls the lock on both sides? Also is there a way for me to know if it comes with security pins in it or not? As Id like to get one with security pins in it. Thanks again!

If you want security pins go with schlage. I don't remember what model I'm using now but it was one of the less exspensive deadbolts and has 4 spools. I don't know about Kwicksets though. The ones I can buy here at the exchange don't have security pins but then they only sell one model here.

So I went to Lowe's today and ended up picking up a Schlage. I believe the model is B360. After I got back home about 15 min
later I had one whole cylinder dissembled. Boy you weren't kidding about the security pins! I will probably start off with taking a
few of these out as this is my first crack at security pins.

Iv got two questions. If you look at the first 3 pins they look like the 4th pin except that the tops of those pins are a bit less
thick compared to the bottom. Are these not spool pins, or are they just a different type of spool pin. To me it seems like theirs
4 spool pins and one regular pin.

Secondly does the Anit-Pick shield just prevent the internal components from being tampered with or does it serve some other
purpose?

That is the same type I picked up that I didn't remember the model of. The fourth pin is probably just manufacturing differences but they are spool pins. Anti-pick shield? I am going to assume it doesn't really affect too much since it doesn't seem to affect me but maybe someone else can give you more info about it. I learned security pins by removing them from my schlage and starting with 2 then working up. When you get to serrated though you will learn a whole new level of annoyance.

Seems I was mistaken about the model number of this lock its a newer one then the one I stated according to the box and some info from the web its a B62 which is supposed to be Schlages Grade 1 upgrade to the line of locks.


The Anti-Pick shield i was talking about is the back half in this picture. According to arrows pointing to this on the box its what
Schlage is calling the Anit-Pick Shield.

The anti pick sneld is the metal liner peice which you place in the 35mm hole in your door, before fitting the lock. This has nothing to with being pick resistant as lp101 users understand it, it's about resisting against ice pick attack, which can be pretty easily understood if you look at pictures of the lock and know how it works. It's a bypass/destructive technique, so it can't be duscussed in the open forum.

The learn lock picking lock is a chinese made GMS branded Sargent LA-keyway mortise cylinder, 6-pin. With a random selection of (what looks like) LAB pins. Don't lose your driver pins because there's 6 normal ones and 6 spools and that's it. On my example, the plug broaching is crap and that makes it easier to work with.

Basically a 15$ (at best) cylinder with 2$ worth of pin and 5 minutes of work with a drill press and tap set. Oh and a free allen key. I'm not that impressed, the idea wasn't bad, but the practice isn't so great. I should've just bought a (retail) schlage cylinder.

So what you are saying is I should get me a bunch of Schlages, some metal setscrews for the top, a tap and die set and some repinning sets so I can start making some money with decent practice locks.
