hacksaw picks

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

hacksaw picks

Postby subtlevoice » 15 Feb 2005 21:57

spent 3 hours at a bench grinder.. made 4 hacksaw blades into approx 12 picks.. had a few mistakes, but got pretty good at grinding. Made a few hooks and some rakes, etc. The rakes are suspect.. wasn't sure as to scale, etc.. about to try them out and see how they work..wish me luck!!
(on a painful note, the grinder caught one of my fingers and gave me a nice little groove! :) )

index here, too.. heh

basically ive got a kwikset deadbolt assembly.. started with 1 pin, picked, moved to 2, etc.. i got up to 3 and could do it very very well/quickly with my old picks.. that was as far as they reached..
I put in four
set the first three just like normal
and then stuck in a really jagged rake I made today.. ..pop!!
It felt great..
Tried it again on its own and its only getting .. 2 or three pins
not really sure how to use it, though ;)

but...WOW
the set the first three and wiggle the rake works really well

Seems to me that there is one pin on this particular lock that likes a hook pick.. to be lifted with a little more vigor than the rest.. Definately will need to-rekey this once I know I can get five.. to make sure I'm not just doing this lock via muscle memory.. going after a cheapass padlock i bought today too

Download the powerpoint templates that were posted (they make the scale of picks a easy task). also if you use plumber snake than you will not have to grind as much. IMHO they turn out better with plumber snake than hacksaw blades anyway. :)

Am I the only one who wears gloves? I would suggest that strongly, since there are several nice little marks from my cutoff wheel in the leather. Also don't forget the safety glasses. These things are important since using the picks (or anything else) won't be as fun if your body gets hurt. It's too easy to say that you're careful enough and won't need these things, but unforseen circumstances can really screw you over. Take your time and be smart :P

I was grinding one time and pulled up a chair to sit on, so i'm grinding away and all of a sudden the chair leg breaks and I fell right into the grinder, face first, it ground down part of my forhead when I hit it and was left with a HUGE bloody spot. I didnt need to go to the ER, but it gave me a nice nasty scab that I had to explain to people for the next few months. Then I found out that the chair was put there by my wife, she had put a broken chair out by my work area for me to fix but didnt tell me :D

- so learn from me and wear full body armour and a helmet lol

heh, iv alos cut myself on my grinder, but worse was when i was grinding a small rock(dont ask, their was point, but dw about it) and the rock slipped out of my fingers and got sucked into the grinder, went round te wheel gard and shot it back out at me... painfull that was, i dont surgest it.

but yeah, post some pics of your picks.

I that when i dont use gloves its easier and better for the pick because if you forget to cool your pick while grinding with gloves on you wont notice but if you dont wear gloves you feel the warmth

yeah, i got to agree with that, and if you have haver tryed to use a pick that was made "hot" as such, they bend and break really quickly, and if its a good pick, that really suxs.

yeah.. 12 picks from 4 blades.. 2 blades for 1.20
also spent 35 cents on hex wrenches perfect for tension once ground to an axe at one end..

Plumbers snake? hmm interesting, i'll have to check it out. I thought it was twisted wire, though...

The 5 pins in the deadbolt are kicking my arse. I got it once, first try.. havent gotten it since.. :(
