my first unfinished lockpick, any suggestions?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

my first unfinished lockpick, any suggestions?

Postby rean1611 » 18 Jul 2005 16:29

this is my unfinished pick, (it started raining so i had to stop) i thought i would just scan it and see what people thought. Im going to make it into a rake of some kind. 1 question though, how can i make the hacksaw blade more stronger, i feel it is going to snap if i put a little too much pressure.

here is a link to the pick

As quick said above, you've left the head too small to do anything major with it. Perhaps, just making a diamond pick and getting started on the next one.... I suggest a half-round feeler (half hook/whatever) and then a three hump rake.

If you bent the tip of that one to 90 degrees, you'd have a handy tension wrench. Take more off the "handle" portion to make it like the regular tension wrenches, or leave it as is and see if it's workable with the larger "handle".

All is not lost there. As Chrispy suggests, you could get a half-diamond out of what is left, or you could slim the tang down to about half width, shorten by about 30% and carefully bend it to make a hook.

Failing that, you could just use it for counting the number of pins in a lock.

Tell you what you could do, if you have a dremel (which I assume you do) you could use a grinding wheel to put small indents into each side of the head diagonally opposite each other. It will be the start of your rake collection and a decent launching pad for future projects. It will be a small rake, you'd just have to smooth the bumps out. (A diamond would be a better idea though.....)

That's decent for a first pick. Now grind the paint off and buff/polish the metal and you've got yourself a lockpick!
