Paperclip Lock pick Guide! by Sams Choice

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Now all we need is a guide on how to heat treat paperclips...

You take a lighter, get it hot, and quench it in water... The wire gets much harder. Try it.

Sams Choice .....Thanks for doing your tutorial. I for one appreciated it.

Yes, IF you have the proper skills even lowly paper clip tools can be made to work.

In my opinion, newbies or people looking for their first pick set are virtually wasting their time, subjecting themselves to little more than self defeating fustration; when trying these tools.

Some times it seems every wanna be James Bond posts here asking how to open locks with a paper clip or hair clip.

Unfortunately you already need some basic picking skills for these tools to work.

Locksports involves an aspect of solving a puzzle. Some users here limit them selves to conventional lock pick tools either bought or homemade.

Nothing wrong with that.

Others, like myself, enjoy taking it further with tools improvised from stuff found around any home.....producing a working tool out of nothing more than common paperclips, coat hanger, and rock and concrete to shape them.

Hans Conkel wrote a book called "How to open locks with improvised tools" full of ideas for "make do techniques" for those that enjoy this kind of exercise.

Like yourself, Sams Choice, I have learned that posting some ideas or concepts can be rewarded with a lot flames and put downs.

Consequently, some have responded to this negativity by simply not posting about their ideas or discoveries.

Others like myself prefer to post anything highly experimental or unorthodox on other sites or in PMs to people known to be more open minded to "crazy ideas".

Hahaha!! I am amused. If those paper clip picks really work, kudos to you. After all, the reason most people are here is because they like to solve puzzles, neh? I think 'how to pick a lock with a paper clip' is a pretty neat puzzle.

So, do they work? How effective are they?

I started out with some clips. I was at the gym with my buddy and I put the keys to my locker in my pocket, at end of workout, no keys. We were there for a while and I finally asked the lady at the front desk for a paper clip and a pair of pliers. I bent part of the clip in half and then bent the tip making a good wrench. Then, after bending the tip of the rest of the clips I picked the lock in 8 sec.

they work really well. the snap pick is a fun idea and works, but it takes a bunch of tries and to set your hand again after a flick takes a couple seconds so i could take up to 4 minutes to open a lock. The auto pick i only got to try on a ford 8 and 10 cut and a pontiac trunk lock, and im not sure what that was but it worked on it. But the rest work fine. The rounded ones work on wafer locks and the hooks work well on tumblers. The warded one works ok, but only if it is a fairly new lock. Usually when i find a warded lock lets say to a warded padlock, it is usally old and from the 70's and difficult to open.

alright this is for you demon. Here i am opening a padlock with nothing more the paperclips. it isnt a cheap padlock either. It is a Brinks padlack and has 5 pins and 4 are spools. i use a snake paperclip. there is no sound though. I used my crappy camera because i was in a rush to do it tonight because i wont be able to do it till tomarrow night. My batteries in my nicer camera are dead. i think you can tell that it was done. i then open the lock to let you see the pins. Camera sucks but hopefully you get inspired.

enjoy! haha.

Can't wait for the tubular lockpick guide. Have you already picked a tubular lock with clips or are you trying to figure it out?

I've seen some nice craftsmanship and clever ideas at this site since I started reading it, and I have to give you an A+ for accomplishing a set of picks out of paper clips. Very clever!

I own this same padlock and mine is very stiff to turn even with the key. Is yours the same?

I can't imagine a tubular lock is half as difficult to pick with paper clips as a normal lock. The only difficult part would be making something to keep all the pins the same height as you turn it.
