Tubular lock pick question

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Does anybody know if this red highlighted part in the picture has to be removed with pliers or something as a modification in order for the 8-pin lock pick to work in a 7 pin lock. My concern is that possibly because of a slight offset of this notch in a 7 pin lock, this part (Which from my observation doesn't seem to serve any necessary purpose) is blocking the pick from entering the lock. Maybe I'm wrong, but I've been trying to get my 8-pin pick into my 7-pin bike lock and it just isn't sliding in, seems to be blocked by this part. Yes, I've removed one of the picking needles.

Those that successfully do this, what are your thoughts? Thanks

I don't know about 8 pin and 7 pin, but I had to pull the roll pin out of my 7 pin pick to get it to fit in one particular lock. It still picked OK. The pins fitting into the cuts were enough to turn the lock without the drive pin in place.

For some reason it just wouldn't fit the lock at all with the drive pin in place.

When you say you pulled the roll pin out do you mean the drive pin? I assume you're talking about the part of the pick I'm asking about. Did you have to break it to take it out or are you able to take it out without damaging the pick?
