Memory Metal Lockpicks?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

I haven't looked into it for some time, but I belive that the current is causing heating in the wire, seems the most likely thing to me.

As for the steepening hook, by laying this metal on a thin layer of standard metal (most of the metals I saw were wires ~.3mm diameter.) It would bend away from the standard metal towards the smart metal, steepening.

How efectively this can be done, I haven't a clue, I'll have to look at the range of motion on these things. But I belive they are already used in robotics. The change in size does increase with increased current but I doupt its a linear thing. Guessing at it needing a greater increase in current for the same shortening once already under current. They do shorten reliably however.

Anyone has has a go at this, good luck. :D

bi metal thermometer

Postby raimundo » 22 Apr 2008 9:48

thermometers and other devices that must respond to temperature are often made of two different metals with different expansion characteristics, fused into a single piece, so that when heated, one will expand more than the other and cause the piece to bend toward the one that is not expanding as far. this can be controled fairly precisely if you can regulate the temperature. there are many possible nanomechanical solutions to lockpicking that are not pursued because the people who would like to make them haven't the sofisticated manufacturing capability.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

Well at the very least, adams right trip wires could be made.. If they were strong enough to interact with the throw bolt you could hae yourself a nice kit.

Get a lockout in summer or dead winter with a warped fram.. slightly bend your wires  .. which I have, simple dip them in water and your golden again. :)

Also if your going for the Pro/allstar lockie look nothin says class like tools with a memory.
