When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

I agree with you about the tension wrenches Ray, I too have given an alternative some thought. The main problem to get around is how to keep the tension on the plug and not the housing below the keyway. My idea would work more like an adjustable wrench, you would place it in the top of the keyway in front of the 1 pin. Instead of having one wrench in the plug there would be 2 one on top of the other, then a slight twist of the knob would seperate the 2 and wedge it in there. It makes sense in my mind anyways :?

I'd still really like to see a wrench that doesn't need to go into the keyway at all -- say, it attaches somehow to the face of the plug, or maybe inserts somehow into the seam. I need my room in there, darn it.

How about a toothpick and some super glue?
I'm being serious, cut off the rounded tip of a square toothpick,
dab a bit of super glue on the plug, at the end, snap it off,
a quick razor will get the rest of the glue off.

Cracksmans idea of a tightnening wrench tip as I can picture it is similiar to a type of straight slot screwdriver that grips screws for initial setting in the hole. I wonder if one of these types of screw drivers would be adapted to the purpose.
About the the hose clamp style of adjustment between two flat pieces of metal, it occurs to me that the amount of movement needed is so little that it would not need many slots in the metal to cover the waterfront. Micks suggestion for a large thumb wheel is of course the way to go, but it also gave me another idea for how to adjust the lenth of two flat pieces of metal, with an eccentric wheel to cam them together or apart. a spring load would make it seek the widest possible adjustment. picture the axis of the wheel fixed to one of the flat pieces, and the other piece controlled by a slot in the thumbwheel.

Possibly even quicker to use, would be a clamp down type system like the visegrip plier, made on a smaller scale of course, the two pieces of metal could be mated with one wrapped around the other, (have you seen those cheap boxcutters that are used in the superamerica stores?) or you could use a side clamp somewhat like the little screw on older vernier calipers. or you could use an eccentric wheel that grips the side like the vernier, so that you simply put the tensor in, adjust the width, and tighen the wheel.
do hospital intravenous drip tubes still have the little pincher that adjusts the flow with a wedge and slider system, if you can picture this, the same wedge and slide could be used to tightnen adjusted tension. 8) think of the cheap box cutter the wedge and slide, and inside the outer wrap of the handle, the second flat piece of metal could either be angled to create the wedge, or it could be straight and an eccentric wheel could turn to grip it. Yeah, thats the best idea yet for simple and quick to adjust.. the edge of the eccentric wheel could present out the edge of the wraparound, and the pinch could be adjusted so that you dont have to turn it very far. yeah, I can see it in my head. oops, a babe walked by, and I lost the picture. :P

Ray, can you describe the babe?

p.s. I am sort of following you, and a wedge-type
idea should work well, any chance you could do a
little sketch?

As the image is probably now seared upon the inside of his 'lids, I'd hazard a 'yes'.

Thanks for the good info Cracksman. You said the thickness of the Falle picks is .6mm, what is the thickness of the tension wrenches? By this I mean the non-adjustable ones.
