When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

http://imgh.us/topp.pnghttp://imgh.us/topp.svgHere's something a little different I made. I probably have no business doing this. I know nothing about graphic design, and even less about lockpick design. All I have is some digital calipers, some SouthOrd picks, designs stolen from people much smarter than me, and a lot of patience. I was kinda disappointed that I couldn't find any existing templates in a format that could be easily modified, so I decided to make my own. Obviously none of the designs are anything new, but I did make the templates themselves from scratch. The first one is in PNG format for most conventional uses. The second is in SVG for anyone who wants to modify them or make new ones. I used Inkscape because it's what I have available, but I assume other SVG tools would also work. I thought it might be a good idea to release this under the CC BY-SA license, which basically means you can do whatever you want with them as long as any improvements or other modifications you make are shared with the community. The ones I have so far are basically a combination the ones that were easy to make, and the ones that I actually want to manufacture. I've tried to be as exacting as possible, but some parts are eyeballed, estimated, or otherwise fudged, so I wouldn't put them in a laser etcher or something like that just yet. Please note that while I intend to machine some of these when I have access to the equipment, I've never physically made a lockpick or done any other real metal work myself. They were designed to be actual size and the dimensions of the document are made for standard A4 paper, but printers are always a tricky thing. If people actually like them, I may make some more and try to refine some of the rougher ones. I might be too ambitious, but if people would use them, I'd like to eventually make templates for pretty much every kind of pick imaginable. In the mean time, I would welcome feedback from more experienced people as to how they could be improved or whether they're even any good in the first place.

http://imgh.us/topp_2.pnghttp://imgh.us/topp_2.svgNot sure if anybody is using these, but I made some improvements for myself, so I figured I'd go ahead and share them. - Significantly shrunk the handles - Added several more Bogota picks - Slightly raised the humps of the Bogotas - Very slightly modified the shape of the short hook - Reshaped both of the snakes, though I'm still not entirely happy with them - Spaced out the balls of the snowman picks more - Added a 6" line at the top to verify scale when printing - Added some metadata in the SVG version, the label of each pick now contains some information about the design basis and construction of the pick

Thanks to everyone, both the original owners and the posters of the Templates. This gives me something to ponder. I'm fairly handy with a dremel style tool, which is good, because I don't own a bench grinder. I just don't know what to make them out of. Obviously I wan't them to be as strong as possible while at the same time giving feedback while picking. I guess I'll keep digging through the posts till I find my answer.
Thanks again everyone!!

A commonly used material to manufacture picks are hacksaw blades. This link gives a pretty good breakdown on the process. viewtopic.php?t=10398

Show us the results. I'd like to see how they come out.

http://imgh.us/topp_4.svghttp://imgh.us/topp-pick_1.pnghttp://imgh.us/topp-rake_1.pnghttp://imgh.us/topp-misc_1.pngOne more revision of my set. Added some hooks, added a bunch more metadata to the SVG for people who are into that sort of thing, and tuned every edge and point of every pick as precisely as I could. This will probably be the last version, simply because I'm not sure what else to add. I'm still open to suggestions/requests for improvements or additions though, if anybody has any. I'm not quite done with The Open Pick Project yet though. Lately I've been looking into 3D printing. From what I'm reading I don't think the metal printers are accurate enough yet to straight up print picks, and don't seem to be cost effective anyway. Still, I think plastic could be used to print extremely high accuracy, reusable templates. I tried to get these printed by a sign shop on vinyl and wasn't entirely successful, so I may see if plastic is better. Anyway, enjoy.

I'm new to LP101 but I spend a lot of time making ergonomic pick handles. Is it ok if I scan them and post the handle designs on here?

Sure, we'd like to see them. Gordon
Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.

The bogie is there only for scale. It's from Sparrows Dark Shift set. All the other ones (all hooks) I designed the handles and made them. They're all ergonomic and I sell them but do allow people to use make them for personal use.

Are any of these templates similar to a Peterson Gem? Speaking of Peterson, anyone know what material they use to make their handles? I know it's some fiber reinforced plastic but beyond that, I'm clueless. Anyone know of a substance that's similar?
