If the locking mechanism is too tight then: pick the lock as normal, insert a screwdriver (or equivilent) while the lock is still turned and continue to turn the lock. If you do pick it the wrong way accidentaly, or if it is simply easier to pick the other way, plug spinners allow you to go the other way without repicking.
