You have that set (talking about the $185 one)? If so could you write a review?

What on earth are you doing with a good quality set of picks out in the middle of the ocean? all I can picture is some sort of james-bondish comando mission that requires swimming stealthily up to an enemy vessel at night and... picking a lock..? and uh....I dunno...
Oh look! it's 2016!

I gotta tell you. That's the weirdest little story I have ever heard. Not only that, but the bad luck factor alone just sucks.

Mine also came from lockpicks.com. I'm not in Canada, though, so no idea how decent they are on shipping etc.
Salzi,
If I could have a diamond hook made with a Navigator handle and made with one of the thinner Navigator stocks, I think I'd have the best of both worlds. Since I can only have my preferred shape OR my preferred construction, I'd take the Rytan if I had to choose.
With that said, I think that the Navigator is the best commercial _set_ available. There's very little deadweight -- five picks I don't use, and I can see myself using three of them in the future.

Salzi: in regards to tension, I have a 6 pin Truguard 2" padlock which has 5 top spools and serrated pins on No1 stack. I haven't had much success with it using 'normal' tension, just been toying with it really, but I'll try your heavier tension method and see if it works for me.
One thing I will say, which everyone can try, is "If what you are doing right now isn't working, 'ring the changes' and do the opposite." This has worked in many a situation, be it connected to your job, or your hobby. E.G. Sometimes when out fishing and nothing is happening, doing what goes against your better judgement produces unexpected results.
If it ain't broke.....pull it down and see how it works anyway!

I know this doesn't belong here but, I have found that the best way to atract fish to a lure is to spray that lure with WD 40 give it a try sometime.
*note-I have only tried this in fresh water.

doing what goes against your better judgement

Pheniox, I am not sure but I don't think peterson sells the navigator set. I have an american padlock with serated top and bottom pins in 1,3,5 and serrated spool pins in 2 and 4 with serrated bottom pins. I can not tell the differance between a notch on a serrated pin and a set pin when I use light tension but, when I use medium tension it makes the lock fairly easy to pick (yes, I just said that an american padlock was fairly easy to pick). If you have an american padlock try using slightly heavier tension and with a little practice I bet you will find it is far easier to pick than before.[/quote]
I agree i have had many 1105 series aluminum body padlocks where all 5 pins are serrated (of corse there is 6 holes in the core) but only 5 are used and useing medium tension you need more pressure on the pins but they "click " into place and make picking them a lot easer
