When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

That said? I have no idea how long it takes to make a pick. Well, I have some idea, but I don't make them myself. I will abstain from setting a schedule, at least until people chime in with how much time they'll need to produce their best piece.
And, as I said, we won't be able to do this story justice until the Dutch Open issue (which will be nice, as folks take a good, hard, serious look at different pick designs at that event, as anyone who has carried Rai's Bogotas into battle can attest) so don't worry about our publication date as far as a deadline is concerned.
Are you at least gonna give a prelude to what's coming with the pick competition? A little juicy juice appetizer maybe?
To all those involved, brilliant idea and execution, I'm trying to come up with some images that can be taken and put on handles 1/4 - 5/8 wide, probably too wide for conventional picks, but as was previously stated, it's for Zeke so it's gonna be worth it.

I haven't had time for pick making recently because I am working on a project car, but I'll put in a few hours doing this. Sounds like fun, good idea!

Not adding myself to the list, it's quoted below so as not to break the momentum, BUT - are the judging requirements going to be based solely on appearance?
I think I may have a solution to both our shipping problem and part of the judgment process. Heh - it might also be a little selfish...
What do you guys think of shipping the final picks to Boston, I'll happily re-imburse everyone who participates for the shipping. Squelch and I will get together with Eric343 and the Boston TOOOL chapter, plus anyone else in the Boston area that wants to come out, and actually give the picks a test run through our favorite locks, comparing them to similar picks already in our arsenals?
We can photograph them when they arrive, giving each of them the same backdrop and lighting, etc. so no one will get stuck having to take a picture with a cell phone for the comp, and at the end of it we'll bust out the 1200, give the picks a quick rubdown to remove any offending marks we may have left behind, package them up and ship them as a complete set for the auction.
We can set different categories for judgment. Style (judged by everyone) Ingenuity (judged by everyone) and utility (judged as impartially as possible by TOOOL Boston). You make an L rake? We'll compare it to an L rake. You make a half-diamond deforest? We'll compare it to the same. We'll time our attacks and make sure that each judge uses each pick sent in. This way we can judge how much of an improvement the homebrew picks pose compared to comparable commercial picks. That will be the "utility" score.
I'll need to simplify and specify exact criteria and what to do in certain cases (like if someone sends in an L rake and maybe we need to rake & SPP to kill the lock we agree to all use the same hook in each test to pair with that particular pick, you know? Or if someone sends in a completely unique pick shape.) but let me know what you think of the idea.

I think your idea is the best one I've heard yet. If we relied only upon on a forum poll it could cause problems, like it did on the locksport manifesto.
I'd like to suggest having a deadline of August 31st to get the picks into your hands to begin the judging. That'll hopefully give everyone plenty of time to make something nice, and be early enough to have time to do a writeup for issue #6 of NDE Magazine.

yeah its a great idea
also august 31st sounds like a nice time frame everyone should be done by then
if this works out, this should be one of the shiniest competitions ever
P.s
should we keep our ideas secret or can we reveal them?
