criminalhate's Homebrew Picks (Big Pic's Dialup stay out)

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Sweet. How does that green tipped rake work for ya? Which is the first hook you reach for? Been following the auction, awesome.

the first hook is the blue with green on it.

The rake works well but I'm not a huge fan of rakes so I rarely use them. The design is a slightly smaller one based on one of my SO's.

My guess was between the blue and the double ended green. Any special reason for the blue on green? Sometimes I put small bands of other colors on mine so I can get the one I want on the first reach.

I've made half a dozen or so of the SO rakes, and my success has been limited with them also. Seems like 10 percent of the time they work great, but that hardly seems worth carrying them. They are pretty cool looking though. Especially the green one. The only rakes I find useful are the snake for wafers, and the bogota's.

it's hard to tell but there is a small amount of arc on the blue/green that helps get over longer pins.

With rakes my bogota's get the most use but like I said I rarely use any of them. It feels more like cheating then picking.

For some reason I can never make a good snake =P

first off I like criminalhate's postings. Always beneficial and informative...with that out of the way, the pics look great, but I am wondering how portable they are? I love windshield wiper inserts, they are strong, forgiving, and easily machined. I'm contemplating just heat shrinking directly onto the blade with no "grip" filler. mainly due to wanting them portable.

So crimnalhate, do you carry these around?

thanks,
dopp.

I have I usually only carry 2 or 3 picks with me and a couple of tension wrenches. The picks fit perfectly in a leatherman case I have.

Why did you decide to go with the short hook for the comp? I know it isn't a regular short hook, but I don't know what to call it.

I hate to be critical, but it is the same style as your everyday picks. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but didn't you want to try something flashy or experimental?

Don't worry I know where your coming from on the question. The reason I decided to go with a short hook/ deep reach/ weird thing is because I figure everyone is going to go out and make some kind of specialty pick or rake. I figure I do a slight variation on the standard hook. Why would someone want to have a whole kit of really nice picks they don't use?

Plus as you pointed out it really isn't a standard short hook. It has properties closer to a deep reach (with the rocking off the bottom of the cylinder) but also a lot more control (in my opinion) like a short hook.

Like I said I don't plan on winning but it gives more people a chance to see if they like my picks.
