Making Falle Style Wrenches

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Wait, you didn't see the forum rules where rule 1 says "every member must read every post starting with post #1 before they post any questions" ? I figure everyone would have come across the Falle wrench thread regardless.

After reading through all the posts i know this is a little off topic i understand this is mostly about the ability to do the etching itself to most but as an alternative to those scared of playing with electricity.

I have done Similar to this with slotted end and scraps of hose clamps can make all sizes fairly easy and can snip out the inside to the size you want with side cutters. I have not taken the time to make one worth using or taking a picture of so i cant say its actual legitimate situational usefulness or how long it will hold up etc. But i figured i would mention it.

I understand the real $$$ Fall set comes with a adjustable wrench set i believe that have sliders and i figured anyone out there making picks or learning with hose clamps especially (i have made some amazing hose clamp picks out of 301 stainless hose clamps) could try their luck with making various sizes of pick through tensioners or sets similar to this style potentially.

Repeat until you have a 90 degree bend then repeat on the other prong. I can't stress enough that you need to go slow when bending...

....This wont give you a perfect temper (Read: Harden) but it will be plenty strong enough for the purpose. If you really want to temper (read: Harden) it back to rock hard you'll need to use a torch to heat it to a cherry red (you can test it with a magnet, when hot enough a magnet will have no effect on the metal) then quench it in hot water.

Last, put it in a 400 F oven for about 30 minutes and quench in cold water.
<---That is tempering

1) If you use some leather in the pliers that you're bending with, it will insulate somewhat against the heat sink effect of the pliers and it negate tool marks. I use small strips of leather cut from my knife stropping leather, but any will do. You don't need to do it, but it does give you a bit more working time and error room

2) I'm being pedantic, but what you call tempering is actually hardening. Tempering steel is removing hardness, and therefore brittleness. The procedure is correct, it's just the terminology is wrong

3) You don't need to quench after tempering in the oven. There's no harm in it, but it's not necessary. When you're tempering tools with a forge it matters, but in an oven you've already heated the whole tool to the same temperature, so temperature creep isn't an issue.

Brilliant tutorial, I'm gonna make some this weekend. Having more tools in the kits is never a bad thing, even if all they do is fill the empty spaces

These all look cool. I know about the 3 or 4 major manufacturers of picking tools.
Is the a list of smaller companies that make high quality tools, or even individuals who have a small part time operation in their basement?

Not guys in China however.....

There are some threads that list all the manufacturers out there, here's an example: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=60658#p446973
