ToolyMcgee's Picks

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

your almost on it, the one I made had the pick tips inward, however if that one works for you, good job.

Raimundo... I made it upside down and different on purpose. I just spat it out because you were so fast to reply. I have no real use for it because as you said it is large and so not pocket friendly. I just made it for proof of concept.

What's up everyone? I have been making some smooth stuff, but for today you only get to view the junk.

Rather neat little duo. I have already turned the smaller short hook into a tensioner as well. I left the copper color on as much as possible because I like the contrast.
ImageAs you can see the looper is thinnner than a standard wiper blade. At least as thin as a polished pick from a wiper blade just for torture testing.
ImageBefore torture testing. This is the shorty.

I have broken the loop after 3 hours of newb style heavy handed picking. I bent it back about 12 times from a 30 degree bend. To make the story short you could not break this pick without months of standard abuse, or so much tension that it would be next to impossible to set binding pins. I am impressed by it toughness and feedback. Not as good as stainless for me, but next in line just for ease of malliablity and toughness.

I believe I have said already I left the copper color on most of it to identify the material origin. I want to see a couple guesses.

houseonfire: I almost exclusively have been using wiper inserts.

No guesses yet? I didn't mean to sound so bossy about it in the previous post, but that crummy photobucket makes me mean.

I found my first street sweeper bristle today! So it inspired me to make a little something.

I know, I'm getting lazy with the photos. I work at night time, what do you expect? Maybe you notice the pair don't line up in the keeper? That's what you get for twisting them AFTER you cut them. Lesson learned. The bristle material is thinner and stiffer than the stainless wiper inserts and gives a more rigid feedback instead of the tuning fork ring of the stainless. Definately gonna be looking for more of these.

I'll do a better job of sizing and cropping next time. I thought I had done a good job this time. Photobucket you bum!!!

I might take you up on that sometime soon. I sent your package out today, I'll PM you the tracking number. I hope there aren't any problems with it at customs, but I have little faith in the government to not botch things up where there is a grey area.

If you have access to sweeper bristles how come you havn't given making yourself something a go?

I missed that post when you made it...awesome work. That looks like something you could hang on your porch as a piece of art in case you lock yourself out or lose your keys, and no one would clue in that it's a pick.

Roxy: In the near future I will post a few links to picks I made that may change your mind about your ability.

Legion303: You are the first person to say this, but not by much. Guess whose wind chime is a Mcgyver entry device.

SFGOON: Thanks for creeping me out.

I am so very tired from a unusually busy week with little sleep. If it wasn't for the rescheduling of the toool meeting I too would be out of the pick comp. It isn't because I am not making picks, but because I was trying to make something special that has kept me down. Unfortunately I feel it will just be another token pick, which really sticks in my craw.

So, in my many failures I have happened upon some decent ideas. This first early idea for a "transforming" pick was put down when I realized I am a cheater, and dispite any radical perspective it's two picks.
Image
"TRANSFORMED"
Image

Originally there were supposed to be alternating cuts in the handles to accomodate holding the spring for the "transformation" but when I realized regular bogota sets could be connected in the same fashion I trashed the idea and just left the grip cuts, which also function to hold the spring firmly in place on a bogota sheath pin. The additional cuts would have been useful as teeth for the tension wrench function as well, but I don't like the way the teeth dig into brass for everyday practice tools. I have been using these alot so forgive the fact they are scarred.

Before I made these I had been carrying a hook around in my case for a couple weeks. An extra pick and a tensioner that took up minimal space. It came in handy so much I had to try something like this. Props to Raimundo for originally combining the two. They are so universal I rarely need to carry anything else which explains why my last few posts have been bogota.

I was planning on getting some more rest, but have found inspiration in another members poor attitude. I hope some of you get inspiration from my lame attempts at pick making.

I don't think he will listen to you roxy. I'm surprised this is still here, usually they don't last this long. If it's still there later tonight I'll give a moderator the heads up on Zexideami.

Here is my competition entry.

I tried hard to come up with something new that would be as universal as possible. I'm sure I might not be the first to blend the two like this, but I havn't seen it anywhere else, and I have looked for weeks. If anyone knows it to already exist please let me know. I call it the broken half diamond. Kinda weak, but everything else was way to over the top or wordy. Double function reverse radiused deforest doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, and devil tail is... well it's a little to D&D. You can't see very well in the photo, but the underside is a gradual hook with a slight lift on the end.

Image
Because of the way the wire is tightly wound and run through the handle at the front and back there is no need for adhesive. No glue anywhere.
Image
This one is photographed through a magnifying glass, so a little bit distorted, but I couldn't get the camera to focus on it without it. Probably 1.3x. The one piece heat treated handle is the other reason I didn't use glue. Yes, it is all wiper insert stainless. Why didn't I use high carbon steel? I felt a need to stick to stainless for this one and keep it real. The same reason I didn't use any exotic handle material, simply because most of the ones I havn't yet, and I felt a need to persue this design as far as it can go. 2nd, because the color wouldn't have matched the handle, 3rd because I was able to make it stainless without sacrificing much, if any, function.

Sorry for the less than perfect pictures. Hopefully the Boston crew has better luck than I did. Enjoy fella's.
