When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

I don't know if the hall of fame is a great place to put this, considering I have had -zero- success with it. Disc detainer pick made from the handle to an M16 rifle cleaning rod, and a very cheap dental hook.

My first home brew pick, put next to a Peterson short hook for comparison. The pick is made out of Klein spring steel depth finder. Sanded with 320,400 and 600. I'm not done with the finishing process yet. I haven't put a handle on it yet, still experimenting with that. I think it's pretty good for my first ever attempt at a home made pick. Very smooth running in the lock, works great.

No doubt! I have yet to get started on making anything for myself. Nice work and nice photo. PS: thanks for the compliments on my other entries! figured I'd knock that out of the way here instead of stack up posts elsewhere

Thanks Doc. Here are two more picks I just made. This one is based off a Peterson Gem, it's slightly different, the little inward point on the Gem isn't evident on mine. This one is based from a South Ord Off-set Diamond, I modified mine, it doesn't have quite an extreme angle on the end of the pick. It also doesn't have quite as sharp of a tip on the hook, it isn't quite rounded off, but it's not pointy like South Ord. Feedback is appreciated.

I really like the look of the last one based off the Southord Offset diamond. You are doing a great job Chris!

I got the standard-size hook from Locksmitharmy, but it was so big that it was almost impossible to use it with euro locks. Since I liked the unusual handle, I decided to thin the tip to suite my needs. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the original tip, but I removed a millimeter of steel from the upper side of the tip and shaft. Then I sanded and polished it properly. Now I have a nice hook, half made in USA and half made in Italy Cheers

Keep up the good work! I know I have not been here in such a while, but from my last post here, there has been many new members and just as much talent coming through. I apologise for my absence though it could not be helped. Work has tied me up so much. It is almost rediculouse (<--SP). Hope to be here soon to help all that may need it. Take care in the mean time, Kaotik

@ kaotik,
That was you who got robbed at the storage locker place wasn't it?
I sent you a corbin ring cylinder and a kaba pushbutton lock,
Then later when Mark Tobias put out the youtube thing on kaba ownage with strong magnets, I pm'd to let you know,
Never heard if you did try that one.
Good to see you back here again.

Thanks Femurat, all my picks are sanded with 320,400,600,800,1000,1200,1500,2000,2500 grit. Then they are polished with a standard metal polish, followed by a polish of Simichrome which also adds a protective barrier, then buffed to a nice shine.
I'll be making more in the next couple days so I will be sure to post them up.

My latest street sweeper brisle picks. Painted them yellow to help me find them if I drop them and for a little better grip. I just used a paint marker because the paint stays somewhat tacky for months, helping with the grip. The topmost tension wrench is for picking SFIC control lines, it has a small tooth on the end that engages holes in the bottom of the control ring. A littler closer on the tips. From top to bottom we have ball, hook, half diamond and straight.
Difficult is in the eye of the beholder.
