How to use a file.

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

How to use a file.

Postby Exodus5000 » 10 Nov 2005 19:49

I found that a lot of the homemade picks here are fresh off the grinding wheel or dremel tool. I think that smoothing your picks is a very important step that is often over looked. I never formally learned how to use handfiles, so I started looking around the net for some information.

This website (though specificaly dealing with gun parts) has enlightened me a bit about how to properly use files:
http://members.aol.com/illinewek/faqs/metalwork.htm

If any other member has a better tutorial, and perhaps a list of files with a description of what to use them for to create what kind of shape, and maybe some extra details on how to use them, then by all means post it here.

Information on how to create perfect geometry and mirror finishes on homemade picks should be made more available, and im sure there are knowledgable people who can contribute. *eyes raimundo* :)

Its ok but a few of the finer more important parts of the process have been omitted, it depends on how in-depth and full of a guide you want, im not raimundo however so ill leave it to him if thats what you want.

Dont be silly, post a nice in-depth guide to filing and polishing :). I only mentioned raimundo because I knew he was a jeweler at some point.
