FPS -7 Folding Pocket Pickset vs The Southord Jacknife pick

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

FPS -7 Folding Pocket Pickset vs The Southord Jacknife pick

Postby Plazma » 2 Mar 2006 15:47

I have been browsing for some new lockpicking tools and I have came across the jacknife pick sets and have read many upon many of local forum posts on them. The only forum posts I have seen would be the ones about the Southord picks.

As most of you know, the Southord jacknife pick is located here:

http://southord.com/catalog.asp?cat=locksmith

This one is the FPS - 7 Folding pocket pickset located here:

http://www.lockpicktools.com/lockpicks.htm

I have heard the good's and bads about the Southord jacknife, but has anyone acutally used the FPS - 7? The one thing i really like about the FPS - 7 in the description is that it has the "W" looking rake on it which happens to be one of my favorite picks where as the Southord pick lacks that particular rake.

Anyway, if anyone has that particular jacknife pick and has anything to share on it please do so here.

Thanks in advance

I don't like the way the FPS looks

Postby bprzybyl » 3 Mar 2006 14:53

Before you read this, just to let you know, I have never owned either of these, I'm just letting you know my thoughts.

I was looking at buying one of those a while back. I really liked the fact that the FPS had not only interchangeable picks, but more than the SouthOrd. That was big for me because I would never use the key extractor on the SouthOrd, so it was basically a decision between getting 4 or 6 picks (for me). But, I didn't like the way the FPS looked by the way it locks. I don't think it locks at all. It looks like it's just a screw with a handle on it. When you wanna lock it, you basically just tighten a screw. This would mean that the picks are kept secured only by how tight you tightened the screw. The SouthOrd on the other hand has the flat spot on the bottom of the picks, which a thumscrew bears down on. This would lock in a lot better in my opinion. As for no (Pick you want) type pick, you could probably just make one. The only hard part I could see would be getting material that's thin enough to fit back in there.

I asked a bunch of people about the jacknife picks. A bunch of them told me to get regular picks. They are now in the mail.

Hope that helps.

While SouthOrd doesn't make a wide variety of picks, you can still change them out by using some needle nose pliers to punchout the retaining pin. Then you can replace any unused or worn picks with ones you want, or even ones you made.
