First set OK to start with?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

First set OK to start with?

Postby ekips » 31 Mar 2006 17:47

Hi, I've just made my first set of picks and wanted some feedback.

Image

So do you think this is OK for a starter set, if not, what should I change or add?
I used the template posted by Mouse (thanks dude!)
Sorry for the pic its taken with my phone, it makes some of the shafts look uneven but its just the light.
I'll try to dig out my camera and take some better ones.

You have the basics, the type of picks to add is determined by the type of locks you are working on and your picking style. Keep making new patterns and check them out yourself, there is no magic set that works for everyone

altough its tough for me to comprehend the scale, the assortment as far as shapes looks very thorough.

on the rake... third one from the left... you might want to skeletonize it with different profiles of peaks and valleys than the flip side. Two picks in one as i see it.

what screwes me up is the angle... no fault of your own, i'm just trying to get a sense of scale. Picks 6 and 9 look like a king/queen set (something i've been wanting to try) but when combined with the size of the peaks in pick #8 or even the rake, i get really confused. What it looks like to me... from a beginner point of view here... is that the difference in the distance from pin to pin that the picks would be employed for is very great. Is there really that much of a variation? I don't know, I'm picking my third lock so i'm new...

anyhow...

thanks for sharing. Looks like a good assortment to me.

cheers

Hey ekips,

Those look like some good picks, congratulations on your first set!
(Good scan by-the-way)

May I comment on some of your picks? :?:

Ok, thanks for letting me! :P

I think that your Half-Diamond, the one on the far left, is rather skinny and appears to be flimsy. I just have images in my head of it breaking, perhaps you may want to remake it a little bit thicker. I like your deep curve, but, it also looks rather flimsy. Perhaps your pick material is stonger than most?
I like the look of your rake (second from left), it appears that it would be very effective, any luck with it yet? The L-Rake (is that what its called) (third from left) appears to have a rather large number of serrations or hills and vallies etc. You may be interested in modifying that particular rake to have a greater variety of heights. Like this one for example http://www.lockpickshop.com/p-SP-12.html. The idea here is to almost try and replicate a key which when pulled in and out and rocked back and forth will try many pin configurations and eventually compromise the lock.

Other than those few little things, you have yourself an excellent looking pickset, I would even reccommend submiting them to the homebrew hall of fame, (look at the top of this forum).

On the topic of tension wrenches, many people reccomend street sweeper bristles. These can be found in the roads especcially near the sidewalk and the curb where there is a better chance a bristle will break off. If, like me, there are no street sweepers around where you live, you may definetly be interested in some windshield wiper blade inserts (the metal strip inside windshield wipers) You can get this as your local garage etc.
Try a variety of tension wrenches, such as thickness, bend angles (to a certain degree) amount bent, etc to find what works for you.

Good luck and post if you need any help,

Treeson, Thanks for the reply, a big help
The half diamond isnt as skinny as it looks, its not flat from when I polished it so the light reflects off it odly but its strong (I think?)
I'm going to make another one as that was the first one I did.
I'm buying myself a table top grinding wheel this weekend so I should be able to make some better ones, I did those ones with an angle grinder and a dremil.
I like the look of the rake you posted the link to and I've already sized and printed the image for a template :D
I'm still trying to find some old lock barrels so I can make a pick practice board with a decent range of locks on.

scanner helped, thanks. nice picks!

As far as a tension wrench... one thought occurred to me yesterday. I was at the hardware store and saw a rake... like the kind that you use in the yard to rake up leaves with. The rakes there had tines that were a little thick, but could be ground to the appropriate width fairly easily. They also seem to be perfect thickness for a lock with a slightly large keyway and you need a lot of torque.

As I recall, older style rakes used tines that were a little more thin. it seems that material would work good for picks. dunno.

but good work.

Postby ekips » 7 Apr 2006 21:35

Well I just got my bench grinder so I made some more picks.

I had a go at the rake from the link treeson posted, I've ran out of metal now so I need to go get some more tomorrow.

If anyone has any good links to some they think I should make I'd be REALLY grateful if you posted them :D

Great Job ekips!!!

That second rake looks MUCH better! I like how your trying some of the different SouthOrd designs.

Post your success with the picks. And remember, its not how they look to people like me or anyone else on this site, its how they 'feel' for you. All different pickers have a different preference for the tools they use. I may not be able to use a certain rake as well as you or anyone else may, but I may be dead nasty with a rake that all of you are very unsuccessful with. The best pickers know which tools they prefer, and design them to the point where they are extremely useful for them.

Good luck, keep up the excellent work, and get PICKING!!!

Cheers, (and sorry for some of the phlisophical stuff...) :)
