Mutzy's Mortice Lock Picks

The Other day, when fiddling with a bulldog clip (actually trying to keep it open with a cable tie :D) and i realised that with a pair of pliers, you can make a simple mortice lock pick with it.

These are the bulldog clips i'm talking about.

The clip I used had a handle that was roughly 65-70mm from tip to the hook that anchors it to the clip. I cut off one side about 35-40mm from the hook, and bent the end handle in a bit with pliers.

Not the most indepth explanation, but for it's worth, it works quite well, with a basic knowledge of mortice lock mechanisms. All you really need to keep in mind is that you need to push the hook up with enough tension to keep it in the groove when you turn it. I find depending on the type of lock, it may take a couple of circular motions (in the direction required, i.e clock/ counter clockwise) to pull the bolt all the way back into the lock body.

The extra bit that you cut off can be used as a lever lifter for the more higher grade locks, but i have a feeling that's for the advanced locks section .

Thoughts / suggestions greatly appreciated.

I've got a picture of the finished product, can anyone host it? PM me for email.

I presume you are talking about either warded mortice locks, or lever mortice locks right?

I reckon the first methord you describe is a button hook. :)

The secod one which you skim around would seem to regard lever locks - I wrote a guide about these already with some wire lever lifters and tension wires included... it's stickeyed in the 'Locks' section.

Cheers.

you mean that sort of stuff isn't advanced? I would've thought it would.
I made it with unlocking the Lanes 1000 range of mortice locks.
(which may be an Australian lock only. I dunno.)

Nope, it's not advanced. :)

We have British Standard locks in the UK, which have curtains in them - this is deemed to be advanced, but since I avoided mentioning them there is no problem.

I am aware that 5+ uncurtained lever locks and the like can be picked with the same methord however...

yeah. We have a few ross 600 series safe locks at work. I'm gonna see if i can make some lever lifters that'll work with basic lever locks.

Wow, picking a lane is not really much of an accomplishment (not to be rude or anything)

Those ross safe locks may kick your arse to the moon and back though.
