CAD Pick Templates

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

CAD Pick Templates

Postby reactive » 23 Oct 2006 8:58

I did these for the locksport competition but didn't submit them properly

I found them while I was cleaning up the computer so I thought I'd post them so all that effort wasn't completely for nothing. I've just formatted my computer but I'm going to load solidworks back on and make a few more so if you have any requests please post them. If you have a scanned template you want CAD'd just send me a PM and I'll give you my e-mail to send me the picture.

If anyone else has the time and skills to CAD up a few template I encourage you to do so. This is my way of giving back for all the things this site and tought me since I signed up, so thanks everyone :P

If anyone has webspace that can host an autocad/illustrator file let me know. This picture is a 300DPI tiff, if you scale it to fit an A4 page it should come out fine.

Reactive,

Just wondered what else you have drawn up in SWX, I also use it day to day for my job and have always been tempted to do some stuff.

I was going to take a lock apart (not sure what model yet, any suggestions appreciated) and model it up in SWX, drop them all in to an assembly. Once mated up properly it could be run through design tables so you could drop in differant pins (depths) depending on how you want the lock pinned. I could then provide cutaway images and animations on how picking works.

The other thought I had was custom made picks, drawn up in SWX and laser cut from file, I have done a few custom handles, will try and post some when I have a few goos ones.

Hey, those are some real nice templates, thanks for sharing!
I was planning on putting together a cad drawing of some picks / wrenches tonight to send in for laser cutting. But first i googled, and found yours! Very nice - klein problem - the link / download is corrupt. Do you / anyone else have a copy and are you willing to please post / email it to me?
I got all excited with the headstart... and now i'm kinda sad...

It's a great idea to make current drawings.
It was the right choice to optimize the shapes, that you have plotted only outline contours.
Here are a lot of templates but most of them are only scanned and in poor quality.
I hope the “falle” picks will be available somedays.

Thank you jimb! I have already used the templates of the falle hooks. It's works very well.
I used my new method anodic etching.

But the quality of the second picture is no high enough in my opinion and I hope these templates will be available someday in the drw format. The advantage of a CAD file is, that you can use it for laser cutting.

I have experimented with software that converts jpgs to cad format with results that are
almost useable but not quite.

Is the software not good enought or is it that the .jpgs are not good enough?

Not sure about the program you're using but try something like CorelDraw, pretty sure you can save whatever you make on it as CAD. Not 100% sure since I don't have it but take a look at it.

Made this in solidworks when I had too much time on my hands. Very simple but thought I'd share it anyway.

What level of education do you need to become a cad/drafting/design teacher at the college level? I have a BS in Industrial Technology and have been a civil drafter for 4 years. I was thinking about getting my master's degree and maybe pursue teaching. Would I need some kind of teaching certificate or classroom experience in order to do so? What master's programs would be available in order to achieve this? Thanks for any help.

What CAD software is best for small part machining? I have some small simple parts I need made by a machine shop. Two are just flat pieces that would be cut out of 8mm steel plate and two would be lathed from 30mm steel rod. One machine shop I talked to asked for the CAD file for the pieces and also requested them in IGES format.
