making a large set from sheetmetal

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

making a large set from sheetmetal

Postby MaddHatterPYRO » 20 Nov 2006 13:01

im getting a dremmel tool with a metal working kit and i would liek to make a large set. i know there are templates all over the net. but i wat to avoid using hacksaw blades, has anyone ever bought a sheet of metal and cut picks out of that? if so how did it come out and what kind of metal would be best?

This is how I made mine. Make sure you use a high carbon steel, and not just any sheetmetal. That pot steel does not make very good picks. Try Precision Brand C1095 tempered spring steel. It's pricey and kind of hard to find but works well. It comes in sheets of varying thickness. I prefer 0.025". Call around at local tool and die and industrial supply shops to see if they carry it and/or sell to the public.

As a side note, cutting the steel with a dremel produces a lot of heat so cut slowly to avoid destroying the temper. My rule of thumb is if the steel becomes too hot to touch, let it cool before continuing to cut.
