the "W" pick

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

the "W" pick

I have had AMAZING success with the wierd "W" shaped pick that comes with a lot of sets. If you dont know which one im talking about, its the SP-11 from Southord.

Does anybody else prefer this over other picks. I think i have a new best friend here.

I've heard that called a bogota rake (I believe) and a triple diamond. I had one, but had absolutely no success, so I gave it anyway. I've never been the best raker, though.

Glad it's working for you. My own "best friend" is a Rytan blue diamond hook.

Ive used that pick with some success when dealing with spool pins, but Ive had my best lock with a hook and a diamond hook.

hey skold, if the pin stacks are at the top of the keyway (like in US locks, not EURO) how do you put the pick in? like a W or like an M?

I'd be worried about bending the wafers, myself. You haven't had any problems with that, skold?

The thing about rakes of this design, is that you can insert them both ways. I guess it depends on the lock, but ive always used it like an M.

I've got one and really rate it, not that good on wafers though
sledgehammers make excellent back up picks!

yeah, the wafers and cheap(kwikset mainly) deadbolts are the ones that ive been using it for. i like it because you can with it like an "m" or a "w"....and when i want need to start picking individual pins, flip it over to a "W" and the tip can be used to start picking!! A great time saver, especially since i have the PXS-17, i dont have to waste time switching picks in and out of the brass handle.

The handle isnt required to use the picks, ya know. You probably will find that you make out better without them.

see, i tried that, but those particular picks are really thin and awkward to hold...they dont have the reinforced handles. though the brass handle does definately make it heavier and makes it more time-consuming to pick, i like how it fits in my hand better and you dont lose the feel of the pins as you do the stainless steel jackknife with the same type of handle(southord JPXS-6).

The only pick that I use less than that one is the half diamond, but then again I seem to be the only one on here that hates the half diamond.

I don't hate it, but I haven't found a reason to use one yet.
