How to create a nice pick template

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

How to create a nice pick template

Postby GiGz » 20 Mar 2004 10:53

Hi, great informational site! I want to create a set of picks the exact same as the ones sold in kits. Resizing and going from images with rulers isn't working too well for me.

I've looked all over for a good template to create my own picks that are like the ones you can purchase from various places. I have made my own set out of hacksaw blades from all the other information on this great site, they're not bad but they're not the exact same as the ones being sold. I would like to create a set of Falle and some SouthOrd sets but have no templates to do so.... Here's a way to get some nice properly sized templates help people create their own professional sets.

If you take your picks, set them on a standard letter size sheet of paper "8.5x11" and trace around them with a very sharp pencil you will get a very close shape of the pick outline.

Run this sheet of paper through your scanner set to capture at 8.5"x11" and save as a JPG or similar format. Don't let the scanner crop any area of the picture.

This scan can be printed out at 8.5x11" and you will end up with an exact copy "size and shape" of the original sheet you traced your picks on. If you cut on the outline of the pick, it will be extremely close to the actual size of the real pick. You can print it on transfer paper or sticky back paper then apply them to your material and work from there.

I have tested this with my own home-made picks and the printed copy was exactly the size of the original pick. It would be nice to get a trace and scan of some of the sets out there used by professionals or some basic picks so we know we are using something very close to the ones being sold.

Perhaps you could start this post with your scanned image and others can add to it.

I will start off with several home made picks once I find a URL to link from.

On my computer i've found a way to get scale falle-safe pick pictures(and any of the others on the crypto site that have a ruler in the pic.).
I use the program that came with my printer/scanner, its a lexmark 3100 I think. I would asume anyone else with a lexmark could get scale pic's off the web the same as I do. What kindof printer have you got?

I have a Lexmark 3150 with probably the same software, how are you scaling them to the originals? I've downloaded the pics from the Crypto site but haven't played around with them much, was trying to figure out a universal way of getting a proper sized pick.

Completed Template

Postby GiGz » 22 Mar 2004 11:26

Here's a sample template I created of my home-made picks. They were outlined on 8x5x11" paper then scanned at 8.5x11" then printed out at 8.5x11" and the resulting print-out has the exact same size as the original outlines of the picks.

Auto jigglers, warded keys, etc could also be done in this manner to get exact shapes pre-made and ready to print and apply to material.

Right click and save as. It's 220Kb, scanned in high resolution for clearer lines.

The question is, is anyone willing to take the time to outline a set or even a few of the more popular store purchased picks?

You don't need any special software, the only important thing is to scan your images at Letter size "8.5x11" save it as a JPG or what-not and that should be it. People could clean up the images with their own software if they needed to.

The resulting image, when printed out without scaling will result in an exact duplicate size of the image that you originally scanned.

Some scanners automatically try to scale or crop an image when it's scanned, just force it to capture the above size when you scan the paper that you outlined the picks on. Putting the picks right on the scanning glass and doing the same thing could result in a good template also. I will have to test this and see.

Outlines of the tips and the name of the set would be a great start for anyone who is interested in making their own pick set. Just so they can compare them to a real picture of the original set while working on them.

Here is a small selection of picks that i have. on the bottom is a basic S.O. set that i started with years ago (notice some are bent. ), and on the top are a few of the common hand made ones that i like to use. the image was compressed a lot in order to meet the photobucket 250k size limit but it is 8.5"x11" so it shoud print fine for a general pick template

I've sent you a PM with the instructions. I missed where you said you've downloaded the crypto pictures already so there are instructions on how to do that too, as well as a link to the site. Matt

This image printed out very nice, I now know what the true sizes for the tips are. Scanning right on the glass works well and it's a lot easier than tracing around each pick individually. Thanks for taking the time to scan these, PYRO1234321.

BTW: Your video was very well done, a great start for people wanting to create their own set of picks.

Thanks, Matt.

I will do some scaling the way you have suggested and try to get a template done of the Falle set, so others can try their hand at re-producing these.
