hi guys,
i wonder if you guys know of any websites where i can get spring steel i wanna get back into making picks.
i know that hacksaw blades are the best alternative but to be honest i don't have the time to sand down the ridges on the blade. i'd rather just get a nice but of flat spring steel if i could find it. but I've looked everywhere on the net.
im in the u.k if that helps
any ideas.
thanks

they do sell an ideal product but at over $1 per pick for material it's a bit pricey.
I'm still searching for a good supplier at a fair price myself.

why don'tcha buy a box of .020" feeler gauge made by either precision, o starrett. these are not stainless, but they are made in any thickness you want and the tool steel is resistant to rust meaning that you can still rust them if you don't take care not to store them in mud, but clean and dry and they won't rust.
You can locate these on the internet.
I think you'll be happy with them. the twelve inch long half inch wide ones can be made into numerous picks, one piece as long as three inchs can be split on a diagonal from one end to the other to make two picks out of one 3 inch piece. (to split them, I score repeatedly with a 'general' brand carbide scriber, and use a needle triangle file to make a start groove at the edge of the cut.)
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

Mcmaster ships internationally, and you could order any possible type of spring material from them. ( www.mcmaster.com/)

I really don't know about that one mate. All I can recommend is send an email asking them all the questions you have regarding products and shipping information, you should get a reply within a few days time giving you the answers you have inquired about.
No problem mate, hope they or any of the other member's suggestions works out for you.

another very good source of steel for picks making are the standard stainless steel barbecue skewers.
They come in every sort of length and thickness.
And they are cheap and available worldwide.
Hope this helped.

ialma, would you please elaborate where they're available worldwide?
The reason I ask is not for me but for other members who may have use for them. Also, not all skewers have flat areas like the ones in that photo, so they may not be available in certain areas. You have not completed your profile (location) either and that would help too.
*Note. Questions like this can often be prevented if all the datails of findings are presented at the time of posting.

Amazon seems to have a good selection, many are flat, although it is hard to tell the exact dimensions from here.
It's a good day when I learn something new.

I mean that every small or big hardware store/mall/house furniture shop has a wide variety of skewers for sale.
They may vary in size, width, steel quality though but they are absolutely very easy to be found (and pretty cheap as well, at least the ones I found)

I admit, that Amazon link had some really cool looking skewers. I haven't seen anything like those around my area.
I'll have to keep my eye out on those.
