Homemade Pick - Gliding trouble

Postby Asheron » 28 Jun 2004 9:12

Hello there!

I recently added a new pick to my homemade set (it now numbers 2! :P ) and it is the one with the nob at the end.

(like this one) Image

Anyway mine tends to catch on the pins alot both going in and coming out. Does this mean that I should grind it to a smaller height or should I round it?

Thanks!

Well that's tough to say without any dimensions on the pick. It looks to be a standard half-diamond, a very common and popular style pick. where are you inserting the pick? You might need to insert it lower in the keyway (I had this problem with a deep hook)

Also, when you say "catching" is it hitting the pins and stopping or going in much like a key would?

You might need to file the end slightly, this will give it a slighly rounder edge.

I'll give it a shot on rounding it out a bit.

By catching I mean that I have to really push it in and to get it out I have to wiggle it around then yank it out. :-/

Here are the dimensions:

Shaft: 6.2cm x 0.3 cm
Height of tip: 0.4 cm (includes shaft)
Width of tip: 0.4 cm

The height of my largest diamond is 0.3 cm, so you should be fine. Also, I can see your pick is very roughly ground. You really should sand it with 80/120/240/400 sandpaper series. and round over all edges. Raiumundo as a great tutorial on yahoo locksports on this. You will find your pick functions much better with smoothing and polishing.

Postby Hojo » 2 Jul 2004 9:35

Heres my set....In order of making the picks I used an angle grinder, (To make the basic shape cooling every 5 seconds), my 1 Horse power bench grinder, my 4 horse power bench grinder with wire brush attatchment, and finaly a electric sander and it leaves this cool patteren of them...maked em look specky...(Note, on a few have the sander treatment on them in the picks as its not nesicary)
