just a question, i have searched the forums and looked in the FAQ but with no sucess. I have an old but very very sturdy measurement tool, its that tool thats like the compass but without the pencil.... why cant i remember the name... anyway its all metal doesnt warp or bend when you twist it and is rather thin at the points, do you think this will work fine as a wrench over the long-time. At the moment it works fine but I wonder if it will last.

As long as its rigid enough that it doent break off when placed under pressure it might work. Give it a try.

First - It's called a scale or scaler.
Second - you might have some trouble as it generally has a needle at its tip and, depending on it size, it might be a little too big (lending itself to being unweildly and applying too much torque) If you can flatten it out a little with a hammer, it might just do the job...

I've done just about as much scavenging for materials to make picks and wrenches out of as someone can do. I still find the best material to make a wrench out of is a Windshield (or windscreen if you prefer) Wiper blade. They come in a variety of widths, and the funny thing is I find that the widths are almost exactly what the Southord wrenches are at. Simply cut to length, and bend with a needle nose plier and your thumb!

Dividers is the correct name, but why would you want to use such a cumbersome instrument as a tension wrench when there are more suitable and less expensive alternatives available? Better to leave the dividers for their correct use and get some wiper blade inserts, or sweeper bristles, or even a flattened bicycle spoke and make something which is much lighter and more suitable for the task.
