Review of SouthOrd PXS-14 and Warded Pick Set (w/pictures)

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Review of SouthOrd PXS-14 and Warded Pick Set (w/pictures)

I'm pretty new so I don't know what should go into a review, I guess this one is mostly about the photos. Reply with questions or recommendations for details I may have neglected. Thanks!

And a photo of the tension wrenches:

When I first opened them up, the picks and wrenches were in a plastic pouch and the grips were in a small yellow envelope. I had to put them on myself, and they didn't quite slip on as easily as I wanted. Feel somewhat cheap, but the picks were inexpensive so I can't complain.

The metal that they were made up was somewhat thin, and since I am new to lockpicking I couldn't say that they were cheap, but i feel that I could bend them with ease. The grips are made of a foam, and make picking much more comfortable in my opinion. I raked open my first lock with these in under 30 seconds, which made me feel pretty good about them, especially since it was my first lockpick attempt ever.

The pouch is made of pretty nice material. There is one pocket on the left side. I put the tension wrenches in there and the rest of the stuff on the other side. There is a bit of room left over, so I put the warded picks in there too, which I'll get to in a second. The pickset fits nicely into a suit jacket pocket (exactly 6").

As a beginner, I would recommend this set to any other beginner. The variety of picks as well as the nice case and small size makes these good to start out with, and I feel like I haven't even skimmed the surface of picking yet as there is so much about each tool that I don't know. It should keep me busy for a while, so I would recommend this to anyone else starting out.

As stated above, I am new, but when I tried these out on some warded locks around my house, the pickset opened those locks almost as well as the key would. The metal is thicker than the pickset mentioned above, so they are pretty durable.

The get the job done. Highly recommended.

I've used southord picks as my first set and I still use them after 6+ years of picking. It's really not so much the pick set you use as much as it is the amount of time and effort you put into it. It really does take a considerable amount of practice. However, rest assured, southord is an excellent choice especially for starting out. And yes I'm aware of how this sounds like a shameless plug for southord products. My recommendation would be, after you've spent time with the set you now have and have narrowed your preference down to one or two picks you will probably ever really use, to buy these specific picks individually with laminated handles. You can apply heat shrink to them for a rubberized type grip. Its your preference though.

All of the Southord picks I have (and I have many) were bought as so-called "blemished" pieces. However I can't detect any blemishes on any of them. I have never been disappointed with the quality of Southord products.
