Peterson picks?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Peterson picks?

Postby backspinnn » 18 Sep 2004 20:34

Has anyone tried ordering picks from Peterson? Some of their "City" kits look pretty nice and the price is pretty good. My 32 piece Southord kit is half-full of duplicate picks without good handles, so I was thinking about trying some new picks out. Here is their website....

Peterson are excellent picks.

If you want to order direct from them, they are most likely going to call you and ask if you are a locksmith.

One poor guy on here had his braindead sister answer the phone when Peterson called, and screwed it right up for him. So, no picks for him.

There are a few other websites that carry Peterson, and don't bother calling you. Although I haven't seen any of the city sets on other sites.

So, take the warning for what it is.

If one answered the phone call and simply said "Yeah I'm a licensed and bonded locksmith." Would peterson take that as good enough reason?

Okay, technically this is illegal in a few states, and at least one province, but......

If it's not illegal for you to have picks where you live simply be sure that anyone you live with gives the phone to YOU.

Answer the questions as best you can, and if asked if you are a locksmith say that you are.

I don't know how many arguments I have had about this, but put quite plainly if there is no law against them in your area they shouldn't be allowed to not sell to you based on that.

So, you are a locksmith. Unless saying that you are will get you in even more trouble.

Don't let your kid sister, or brother, or what not answer the phone and screw it all up on you. If you don't sound the part, that could be a problem as well.

So, here is the deal.
Either hope you don't get called and asked, or lie, or try to be reasonable and argue your point. The third option probably won't get you your picks.

The other option is to find a supplier that carries Peterson, and doesn't ask you if you are a locksmith.

I've ordered several times from Peterson (sets, individuals, plastic, rubber etc.) and no one has ever called me. I highly recommend them, and I usually get my order from New York to Florida in 3 days USPS

I like this, it came from lockpicks.com:

U.S.C. Title 39 Section 3002a when mailing "locksmith entry tools" to the buyer, i.e. buyer certifies that he/she/it is one or more of the following: a bona fide locksmith; lock distributor; bona fide repossessor; motor vehicle dealer; lock manufacturer; or a motor vehicle manufacturer;, law enforcement officer; a bona fide fire fighter; a bona fide purchaser for one of the aforementioned; and/or a customer who will have this purchase shipped outside the United States, its possession, or territories; and/or a customer who is purchasing items that are not "locksmith entry tools." LockPicks.com or its parent will not deliver any locksmithing device through the mail to a person who cannot certify that he/she/it falls into one of the aforementioned categories.

An interesting note from one customer... "Interesting, Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary says 'bona fide' means: not counterfeit or copied. And, the word 'locksmith' means: someone who makes or repairs locks. Hell, what do you know, I AM a 'bona fide locksmith!'"

I was looking at Falle picks over at crypto and they seemed pretty nice. At least until I found out they were 160$ and hard to get in the US.

I'm probably going to get myself in trouble here, but I don't really think a moderator should be advocating conning a pick manufacturer into breaking the law (or postal regulations, whatever you want to call it).

Actually I believe it comes down to how "locksmith" is defined by the US Postal code. It also comes down to the terrible language used to define locksmith is the USC, because as the post a little bit up shows you must be a "bonafide locksmith" well once you can meet that federal requirement you can legally inform Peterson that you are indeed a locksmith. So if you are a person that "One that makes or repairs locks" and are "authentic" I don't believe romstar is condoning you lieing to peterson. You are just taking advantage of you status in the USA as a "bonafide locksmith"

just my two cents though
