Newbie in Lock Picking Questions

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Newbie in Lock Picking Questions

Postby Tutrigo » 30 Mar 2009 14:56

Well, as you can see in the subject, I'm new in Lock Picking, and I'd be glad if someone experienced answer me.

Is it possible to open simple locks (5 normal pins) using just 2 hair clips? I shaped two, a tension wrench and a hook, and I put 3 pins down in the correct place (in the place I live pins are down, not up as in USA but still the same thing) but I started pick the pins at the start of the lock, should I start from the ones in the end? Because sometimes I put one pin down, and when I put the second the first one "jumps" to its before-picked-place but I don't know why this happens.

Thank you. :)

Yes, but it is difficult with poor quality tools. What is happening is that the pin is not actually set and the stack clicks back down; it is normal.

yes its possible. there a re lots of youtube videos were kids open locks with those kind of tools. see if u can order a real pick and tension wrench or fabricate better tools. (DX sells a set for 6 bucks, thats a start.)

sounds to me like u are having a problem with enough tension to keep the pins "down" as u say :P

Do you have to use hair clips? They are poor tools.

Perhaps you could make a couple of small tools yourself from some other metal available to you. There are lots of posts on here about how to make your own tools. Almost any strong springy metal can be used. Hacksaw blades, old band saw blades, street sweeper bristles, oil dipstick from a car. There must be something you can find.

Well, I guess I'll order my tools
Tension Wrench [Single End Short TT-02 -> www.lockpicktools.com/images/tt03.jpg]
Short Hook [flat top]
Small Diamond
[all of them in plain handle / SPH]
Total = $3.86 + price to shipping (I don't know how much, $12 I guess)
From www.lockpicktools.com is it a good place to order? I don't work well making my own tools.
Am I buying the correct things to open most locks? Should them be thinner or something?

Thank you. :)

Yeah, that's about all you need to open most locks. I'd throw in a large hook, just for completeness. In harder keyways you'll have a tough time getting small bottom pins all the way up with just the normal hook.

Personally I would go with the plain laminated handles. Those thin plain handles will start to dig in after lots of practice and the laminated ones are firmer to grip, the handle doesn't bend and gives great feedback.

I would also choose the euro slimlines over the others especially if you're going to be picking padlocks, the extra thinness makes it easier.

Good luck!

If you want to see a review on Southern Specialties check out NDE mag 1. You should check out the rest of them too, some good stuff is in there :) here's a link:

I just ordered some stuff from there, so expect a review from me soon!

If only ceejay2005 could be a little more creative and actually post something relevant instead of the same phrase and link all the time..
