different types of rakes

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

different types of rakes

Postby dktf » 24 May 2009 16:07

hi guys,

just wondering what type of rake picks all of you prefer. i recently have been getting some luck with the W rake (more so than the C rake) and i also think that the half-ball pick isn't that bad of a rake either.

i have been getting mixed results from the saw rake...the one that supposedly is shaped similar as a house key?...wondering if you guys could give me some tips on which picks or rakes to carry for everyday use for deadbolt or car locks in case of emergencies :D

Just for emergencies doesn't really warrant practical everyday carrying purposes... that said in the many months I have been carrying picks on me every day for other picking, the only time I have experienced an emergency lockout scenario, it was because I left my pickset in a car, apt, house, to which there was no spare key. So, in that "oh spit" moment I realize they aren't in my pocket, it's a pin and spring carrier bogota pair in my hat or coat which has saved me being locked out or having to improvise a pick and wrench. I have to go with that. Also, I highly recommend having a 3 peak bogota in your pocket set, and a 2 peak spaced wider to work around another pin stack just in case.

I would advise not trying to rake or pick a car door, because the wafers in most auto locks can be so easy to damage, and the difficulty of most makes it tough even for someone who is fairly profficient at picking. Call a locksmith, seriously. It's far more effective to have a spare key to your locks for emergencies, than to have a pick of any kind. Always exhaust all other options before you reach for whatever kit you have on hand.

oh i agree with that notion. i was just hoping for some practical insight on the type of picks or rakes to use. i mean the whole point of learning to lock pick is so that you don't have to call a locksmith, right? that's why i was hoping to have an insight of some of the tools that some of you carry around.

I don't use rakes very often at all, but when I do, the L-rake and a Bogota (sort of rake-y) are my picks of choice.

I have an S rake and a C rake, and I prefer the S rake for sure.

Even though I don't rake much since I have become proficient at single pin picking, these two are my faves when I do resort to raking  :

The first one is great for smaller locks like mailbox locks
and the second one works very well for larger locks like deadbolts and mortise cylinders. It's slope is much larger than that of a standard S rake,so you'll hit more pins with each stroke.

Hope this helps! :D

Best Regards,

Alex.

OOPS,I got that backwards  .The First one mentioned is good for deadbolts and the second one is good for smaller locks.
