Pick tip position: Flush with handle or centered?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Pick tip position: Flush with handle or centered?

Postby subver » 21 Jun 2009 10:54

So while browsing some pick templates and watching videos, seeing other people's picks, etc, I've noticed variations in the position of the tip in relation to the handle. I'm just wondering: is there a difference if the pick tip is flush with the handle, like this:

Or if it is centered, like this:

I'm assuming it is more of a matter of preference, how you hold it or whatever. Have any of you experienced pickers noticed a difference in feedback with the two? I would think feedback would be slightly (if at all) better if the tip is flush with the handle because if it is centered there might be a little more "spring," at least that is my basic line of thought.

Also, I think with the tip being flush it would be easier to make, and would probably look a little nicer since the one edge would be nice and straight.

I'm mainly asking because I really like Romstars templates, but I think I might alter them to be flush with the handle to suite my needs more.
Any thoughts on this? I'm probably just looking too far into this and being overall too picky
Thanks!

I have a rake and a tall hook that are flush with the handle and the rest of my tools are centered. I was going to say that it doesn't really make much difference to me, and then I noticed how I was holding my short hook: using the lip between the handle and the tool end to grip with the tip of my finger. I can understand why the tall hook is flush though - more metal needed for its height.

I can't see it making much difference to be honest although all of the picks I have are centred. It's not too hard to make picks that way but using the existing flat edge does make things a little easier to keep straight, that said, most of the picks I make are centred (roughly) in that way.

I would say feedback would be down to the handle you put on more than anything.

Could make one of each and see what you find difficult or which you prefer maybe?

the centered pick is a short hook while the flush pick is a long hook. i just ordered a long hook from SouthOrd to see what it is like but i like the small centered short hook better.
