Your favourite pick

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Your favourite pick

Postby Scope » 22 Jul 2010 9:07

Name your favourite pick, how long you have had it and why you enjoy using it, can be a new/old or handmade. Only one can be named please.

 If handmade please post a pic! :!: :D

Ill start:
Pick- Medium Hook High Yield Lock Pick - MAX-07
Age- 3 weeks old.
Why- Seems to open the padlocks & cylinder locks i have with ease because of "feedback", faster than my older picks, comfortable handle and it's my latest addition.

Just for interest, so as many of you are invited to post like i have above.

Pick, age, why

Pick: Curl handled bogota euro.
Age: 2-3 years now? But recently departed :(
Why: Nothing feels better in my hand than this pick, and as my picking style has changed dramatically to be euro-centric in the last few months it's risen to prominence.

Unfortunately I lost this pick about a month ago after great use for years. I have other Bogota Euros and I am incredible happy with them, but that curled handle was just divine :)

SouthOrd Hook (deep not shallow). If only because I can single pin pick more locks with that for some reason than any other. I'm usually quicker with that thing than even raking.

It's old and battered now, I really must pick up a replacement sometime, if it breaks, I'd be lost! Quite ridiculous really, as I've a lot of picks. I keep buying them to try to widen my skills, but that single hook still just feels better than any other.

I suppose it is my "signature" pick then? I guess most of us will have one favourite pick that just seems to work better for us than any other does. Why am I now thinking of Harry Potter when the wand choose him? - So the pick, picks it's owner...not the owner picking the pick.

havnt seen you in awhile engineer... hi

id have to go with the peterson slinder gem... because its awsome lol. Ive had and used 1 of these for about a year now... its my go to for spp... usually. for my american locks or anything with a high/low bitting it works like a charm, even when they are abused and bent up lol. slim enough for any keyway yet strong enough for the dirtiest locks...

I've got one of those, it's waaay too flexible for me lol... I find it a bit weird to use, I prefer the regular gem to the slim one. That's just me though, it kinda flops from side to side over pins instead of resting on them nice and solid, and when picking spools sometimes I like to up the tension a little and it bends too much for that. For picking with super light tension though it can't be beat, and I love the shape of it.

As for me, I'd have to go with the DeForest from my southord slimlines. I've had them since december 09 and I just love the feedback I get from this pick. It can deal with any bitting, rolls nice and smooth both ways over pins and it can get around pretty much any keyway... it's fiddly when it comes to heavily warded stuff like GeGe and EVVA but it's still one hell of a fighter. I also found it works really well for rotating pins in medecos!

If I'm picking a lock blind it's the first thing I reach for so I'm not having to switch back and forth between my hooks, although sometimes I like to use bottom of keyway tension and I'll admit it can get trapped easily when it comes to that style of picking.

The black one, at 1.5 years old, because it's small and peppy:

I like SouthOrd Hook which is the best for me. Because it is easy to use so there is no problem with that.
I can do work quick so it is very useful to me. Its really nice.

Not home made picks:
Best is the Southord slim lines for me, especialy the low-medium-deep hook combination, I can open from the smallest padlock to the pfaffenhain "horror" locks with them.

Hi lockpickfan,

nice hook! What's the handle made of? I'm not sure if it's wire insulation, heat shrink or a glued string!

Cheers :)

Mine is the Southord short hook, been using it for about 6 years. It's a little too big for some locks so I'm looking for a good replacement. I haven't bought any picks since the Southord set and the ones I've made either haven't been good enough or have broken on me. Oh well, always an excuse to make more and improve my skill at making them :D

Pick - hook/diamond hybrid (standard hook a close second) from Legion303
Age - 1.5 years old
Why - Incredibly comfortable pick with awesome feedback. This is always my first pick into a lock. It just feels right! :-)

It is in Legion303's thread. The one on the bottom:
