How to use wiper blades?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

How to use wiper blades?

Postby Gobd » 31 Oct 2004 20:02

How do you make a pick out of wiper blades? They couldn't be made the same as with a hacksaw blade since they are not as tall. From the looks of these wiper blades I've got sitting in front of me it seems like just straight out bending them (maybe with heating) could work then just put on a small sheetmetal handle.

Does anyone have experience with wiper blades that they could share with me? I've got 12 wiper blades and could get more so throw out any ideas and I'll attempt it.

They are normally used to create doublesided handle-less picks.

Like the two right ones in this pic :

Thanks much for the picture, it actually did help me understand it a bit. Looks like for the single pick it will be a heat and bend process while a small snake could be made on a grinder. One step closer to being able to make these, keep the tips coming if you can.

It seems a lot of people use them for tension wrenches also.

Yeah, they are handy things, I made a new set recently, i will find the link if you want, but do NOT heat them if you can, you will riun the temper of the blade, and will inturn weaken it.
I use a double -wheeled bench grinder for any picks i make, and clamp the insert between a clamp vice and tap with a hammer to get between 45 and ninety degrees, dependant on preference, i prefer about 80,

I have made mistakes, but never made the mistake of claiming i never made one!
