Looking to buy a new set of picks please help :)

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

If you have an extra £5 laying around then pick them up. Worst case scenario they break or you hate the hobby in which case you didn't waste too much money. If, after a month or so, you decide you like the hobby or they break you can upgrade to a SouthOrd or Peterson set.

That's the same rubbish set they sell from China on DealExtreme.com

It's like wanting to learn how to drive a Porsche by first driving a Kia or Daewoo. It will probably work, but it wont look good, or feel the same.

You'd probably be better served by grinding a few profiles from hacksaw blades or feeler gauge stock.

I've got a set of these, they're actually very usable. Identical to goso picks, it's the same selection as the set they do in the big zipper case but it's a fraction of the price. Obviously this is only a 9 piece set as opposed to 32 or whatever the goso set has, but the auto stuff in the goso set is cack and you'd get hardly any use out of it... so essentially you're paying a fiver for the same sort of kit in terms of usability. Not bad if you ask me.

The feedback is surprisingly good and they can take a decent amount of pressure too. I use them for locks that need a bit of extra grunt where the petersons are too big (or when I'm not getting the feedback I need). They're small enough to get around fairly tight keyways, but nothing too extreme. Very impressive considering the price... a couple of them will probably arrive bent sideways but it's minimal, and the ones that came bent with my set were ones I don't use anyway. You may not be so fortunate, but who knows.

You get 6 hooks, I don't like the one with the grooved tip but some people swear by em. The other 5 are great, and I have a favourite out of those which has served me well. They mostly have very slim and rounded tips which give excellent feedback, I honestly like them a lot. The dimple rake is pretty useless, and there's a super shallow half diamond which is ok for raking (as well as certain bypass methods). As for the big hollow diamond, I dunno what the deal with that thing is.

The wrench is useless, far too thick... but it's not exactly hard to make a few of those. I say nab a set, if you're just starting out you can't go wrong with em. I bought them out of curiosity and for those hooks, they're a bargain. Make a few wrenches out of old wiper inserts and it'll be a while before you need anything else. :D
