Help me design my new workspace

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Help me design my new workspace

Postby femurat » 25 Sep 2012 5:23

I'm moving in the next months, so I'll have a little work space, with a table and a drawer 8)
I'll no longer make picks on my kitchen top.

I already have an old working table, 100 x 50 cm, and a bigger drawer on the side of it.
The space will be the corner of a room, with a window in front of the table and a wall on the side.

I'd like to hang on the wall some locks... all of them to be honest. Like in a museum.
Now I have to dig in boxes to look for the lock to play with. Then I want to look at them and choose easily.
I want them protected from dust, so glass panels are a must.

I'll make three areas, one for I guess 100 cylinders, one for less than 50 padlocks and one for a dozen of safe locks (mainly combos and a few lever ones).
Before you ask about the picks, they'll be hidden in the drawer, so a casual visitor would look at a simple lock collection.
For the safe locks a small cabinet with glass doors would be perfect.
I'd like to have padlocks and cylinders well organized, with shelving for each one of them.
The padlocks cabinet would be the nicest looking, with all the padlocks hanged on nails.
The cylinders one the worst looking but the most used.

I need some advice about this because the result must be nice looking.
What do you suggest? Ikea? Plywood and screws?

Thanks :)

Remember my old workbench at my old house? http://nynex.s5.com/TOOOL-US-Boston/behind%20the%20scenes/squelchtones-workbench.jpg

I do miss that counter and peg board.

What's your budget? You could buy or make something like a shot glass display case:

Hi Squelchy, I do remember your cool padlocks hanging on the peg board. That's what I may put inside a small cabinet with glass doors... you know, without the glass doors the gf would make me vacuum clean them every week

Great idea sandplum. I didn't know something perfect for displaying cylinders already existed. Having seen the price range on the link you posted, I'd prefer to build one. I'll look for DIY plans.

Thanks for the input, keep it coming :)

If you made a display case similar to the shot glass display case, using slightly thicker shelving material, you could print labels for each lock. For example, Kaba 8, Medico Classic Cam 4 pin, Medico Biaxial 6 pin, Kwikset POS, etcetera.
Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.

for making picks a 'bench pin' (look that one up in jewely making books) is the best thing, this is a piece of wood that takes the file cuts and scars so your fancy table top dosent have to. you can probably see one in that video that deviant ollam made of me making picks,
check youtube for raimundo making picks or something like that.
the bench pin has grooves cut in it at angles that are personalised for you, and it is usually custom made for the job you usually do
You can see what I mean at any local jewelers bench.

This can also be made so that it can be taken down and put away so the gf dosent have a fit.
seriously go to a jewelers and ask to look at the workbench, there also a drop tray where filings are saved (precious metals) and you will probably see other useful innovations.

The bench pin can make pickmaking much easier.

Labels, yes GWiens2001, I should think about these also.

Hi Rai, I saw the video you're talking about.
My table already has a bench pin slot. It also has 3 small drop trays under that to save filings of different precious metals.
I plan to use the first as a metal dust trash bin and the others as pick containers.
Unfortunately the original bench pin went lost. I'll make a bench pin from scrap wood and post a picture of it installed in the table slot.

Cheers :)

A quick update on the situation: I've painted and framed a 90 cm x 60 cm pegboard to hang my padlocks on the wall.
I'm working on a small and simple cabinet for my safe locks. I've cut the wood, drilled the dowel holes and gave a light white paint layer. I hope to post pictures soon.

Cheers :)

Here are a couple of pictures of the framed peg board. I hanged a few padlocks I had handy just to see how it look like. I still need to organize them.
You can see the cylinders drawers on the bottom right corner.

And this is the safe lock display: the paint is drying.

I like your modern American 5200 US padlocks hanging along side with old antique padlocks, very cool =)
