Best handle SHAPE ever?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Best handle SHAPE ever?

Postby zeepia » 7 Nov 2012 11:00

When doing picks from scratch, some are happy without any handle and some put heat shrink on them. I´m not here looking for materials, there are a LOT of different kinds out there. Of course everyone has his/her own taste and that can be discussed to dawn and still no winner.

But what I would like to know, what is The Best Handle Shape you have ever tried? I see almost all commercial picks come with that normal stick shape handles with rounded ends, I can guess it´s easy to make and doesn´t annoy anyone too much. Everyone has a unique way for keeping picks in hand so there might me solutions I can´t even figure out without seeing a picture.

I´m looking for ideas before I make my high-end picks, so far I have just been practising and therefore it hasn´t been an issue. Mostly I want my picks to be comfortable and practical. But it doesn´t hurt if they also look good!

Comments with pictures, please! :)

that is a tough one. im sure everyone holds the picks a bit different, and im curious to see some of the shapes people will share. it seems like my fingers are mostly not even on the handle, until im deep in the lock anyway...

i do like the bogata with the axial twist, that makes sense for that pick and probably for all rakes really.
I punched punctuation right in the face!

+1 for Bogatas, however I think those handles are pretty particular to their use.

For regular picks, I actually enjoy the Southord Max handles, the handles are small enough that the wavy finger grip doesnt get in the way if you dont want to use it, and light and comfortable too.

Light weight is the most important thing for me. A light pick let you better feel the pins and gives better feedback.
About the shape, a round section is what I prefer, I use the twist-lifting technique most of the times.

Cheers :)

Im actually developing my own line of picks that will be availible as soon as I get a laser cutter. I have been playing around with handle design so I am thrilled to see this thread. Don't worry though I will try not to impose on anyones rights. I have a couple ideas I would like to throw out.

Count deku from star wars had some pretty ergonomic light sabres did he not.
I personally love a heavy hearty handle. More than 3 layers of metal?
I find myself using different grips depending on the pick. Pivot points for picks that could prosper from pivot motion in the finger tips.
Beter stronger pick designs to extend the life of your picks.

Some random ideas to play with.

Oh, wood, rubber, or metal grips. What feels best?
"How does it work?"
"Only one way to find out. Open it up!"
