Broockhage traning lock

Postby Barthel » 29 Oct 2014 15:58

Hey Guys,

here I want write about my first Lock on which I started lockpicking with passion.
It’s a Broockhage Trainingslock.
Image
I can’t tell anything about the packing because I got it used from a Locksmith for 15€ which is a quite nice price. It came with two matching keys and one blank key with a pretty decent keyway. And the overall finish is quite good although if feels cheap due to it featherweight and the pvc cover.
Image
The lock is made of transparent pvc with a stainless steel cylinder. It contains 5 pins with a kind of crazy bitting, none of the pins are security pins.
Image
When I first started on that lock it really helped to see the pins moving, to see on which pin I was with my hook and how I manipulated other pins with the shaft of the hook.
Image
After a few try's it was really easy to feel the scratching of the pins inside thy cylinder and as you can see I already have some flakes from the pins flying around in the lock, which does not stp the lock from moving.
It’s quite hard to tension it from the opposite side of the pins due to the soft PVC casing.

In principle it’s possible to gut the lock by removing the clamp on the back and push out the Cylinder, maybe I will do that soon to see some security pins working ;).
Image
All in all that lock helped me a lot to develop a basic feeling about tension and pin location, it was able to show me how fast I can overset pins and general to understand how a lock works.
Due to the comparable high tolerances compared to a standard Abus C3 profile the Pins sometimes get stuck at the shear line where you just have to tickle them a little bit and the lock starts moving.
If you haven’t got a cut away lock but want to have something in your hands rather than just watching Videos about it it’s a quite nice thing to have if you can get your hands on one as cheap as I did. New price is around 60€ which is in my opinion overpriced.

holy crap, 60€?! yea that's way overpriced, you can get them from amazon for 50 usd, even after international shipping they shouldn't be that expensive.

didn't check Amazon because 15€ incl. my first picking set was just a great price, well the picks where very stiff broad ones which needed polishing but hey, that was a great price.

But that's the way US Stuff is handled here in Germany... even a KOM Hoodie for about 400USD will be around 700€ (shiping, waiting time, "unique" factor, custom controls, taxes(yes we have to pay 19% taxes for imports above a certain price))

That's crazy. Nothing like jumping in head-first, I guess. I have Mr Wizard's and I love it, but there are many times that I would have benefited from being able to see the pins. Nothing is as frustrating as starting out picking, doing everything as you've been taught, and having no idea why it's not working. I like the idea a ton. Great write-up!

Brockhage makes the same transparent lock with all spool pins, I use them for demonstrations to help people understand how the pins fit together and move but I try to avoid picking them since the PVC is rather soft and behaves very differently than a normal lock. In case you need it, those Brokhage locks use the Schlage SC1 keyway/key blank.

If you are in Germany, Abus makes some great locks to practice picking security pins. My personal favorites ar the 55/40 (equivalent to a Master Lock 140), 64/50 and 80/50. The Abus 34/55 is rather heavy and tends to bend tools but is a great lock to advance to and the Abus 83 series offers a wide variety of keyways in more advanced configurations.
