Help with SC1 Keyway Lockpick

Postby Hades26650 » 29 Apr 2016 16:40

Hello,

I just purchased a 7 Pin (Repinnable) Ultimate Adversary Training Lock. I learned that it's a SC1 Keyway.

I would like to know, what you recomend for a lockpick for practicing with this lock, and keyway, please.

I would start off with a standard hook. If you don't have any picks yet and want a recommendation I would go with the Sparrows Tuxedo kit - https://www.sparrowslockpicks.com/product_p/tux1.htm Sparrows lists their prices in Canadian dollars so when converted to US dollars the kit ends up costing about $32 plus shipping. Another brand people seem to like is Southord. You can find their picks at www.lockpickshop.com and you can get 10% off if you sign up for their newsletter or by entering the code LockLabTribe at checkout. That code is from www.lock-lab.com which has a lot of useful information for beginners. The guy that runs the website is named BosnianBill and he has a lot of good informative videos on YouTube. Just remember that you don't need a huge set of picks in order to start out. If you want to learn how to pick locks the main pick you will be using is a hook but it's nice to get a set so you can try different picks to see what you like. As far as picking goes I would start by pinning up two or three chambers in the rear of the lock and as you get better fill more chambers working towards the front of the lock. For me it was more difficult to pick the rear pins because they were harder to access so by practicing with them first and working to the front of the lock you will find that it will get easier because the front pins are easier to access. That's how I did it and it seemed to work fine for me.

Looks like a standard Ilco 1 1/4" cylinder to me which comes drilled for 7 pins, but is keyed to a 6 pin Schlage 1145A.

Does Schlage even offer a 7 pin key unless you count control keys? I've never seen one.

Make sure that whatever pick set you buy has a diamond, a hook and a rake. When most folks begin picking locks, the rake is the go to pick, later on, when you are more experienced you will probably stop using the rake and use the diamond & hook pick more often.

I will second billdeserthills' comment and add that having both a short and a medium hook may be advisable depending on the way the lock is pinned. The Schlage C keyway family is just complex enough that the differences between standard and "Euro" profiles and pick thickness becomes noticeable. I would suggest looking for Euro-profile picksets, especially as those will keep working for you as you graduate to more complex keyways.

And no, officially Schlage does not make a 7-pin key (excepting the control keys for their FSIC cylinders) but their blanks could be cut to a non-standard pinning scheme which could reduce the spacing and MACS to allow 7 pins to be used.
