k, im kinda new at this, and ive been making picks outta wire-hangers, and bike spokes. i know you can use streetsweeper bristles and pianowire and stuff, i just dont know how to make good picks! I cant buy professional picks because the onlyway id be able to get them would be the internet. i cant get them over the internet. i need help learning how to make good picks, and i hace no grinder, ive been using a file. please help me.

Nothing to help you with really.

You have three tools to choose from. A grinder, a Dremel or a file.

The only other thing to do is to learn the proper shapes and work from there.

There are all kinds of posts here about making your own picks. Just start reading.

You can order over the internet. www.lockpickshop.com has a good deal for picks. I would recommend that you buy a basic set. 14 piece set is alright for a beginner. And if you're going to make your own, I'd suggest you buy a dremel. And some hacksaw blades.

I was under the impression that he didn't know how to order over the internet. I also mentioned buying a dremel because it would be handier.

why can't you order over the internet?

Let's say you have $40 dollars and want to buy a pickset.

Goto a bank with free checking and deposit the money.

Open up a paypal account and link it to your bank account.

Pay with paypal and get your picks.

Problem solved with only a small trip to the bank and a little time on the internet.

Not having a credit card is no excuse for not being able to purchase on the internet anymore...

thanks. i was just at lowes lookin around and they had a nice deal on a grinder. so now i have a grinder. i made some picks outta a hacksaw blade today, before i had the grinder. just cut it down with snips untill i had to start filing, torque wrench out of a nail. the grinder will hopefully be much quiker.

For the trouble of buying a grinder and making a tension wrench (torque wrench?) out of a nail, why don't you just buy a simple set of lock picks? Unless you're really keen on making things yourself--and, hey, that's a lot of fun too--you'll be better off buying your first set than making it.

There's nothing so unusual about using nails. They are like sweeper bristles. Amazingly useful.

Guess that'll teach me to run a thorough search before questioning something new.

I'd still recommend getting your hands on a professional set of lockpicks first. I've heard you'll get better results making your own picks if you've seen some real ones first.

hey man, I'm in a similar situation. I ordered about a week and a half ago and they only sent me "They have been shipped message" a couple of days ago. So I got restless and decided to make my own stuff. Don't let them make fun of you for the nail. I hammered out a nail then bent it in a vice and ground it down. It looks pretty much exactly like my friends 'real' tension wrench, just not shiny. for some comfort, I also hammered the pointed side of the nail into a small bit of wood for a handle. after doing some sanding and carving, my tension wrench looks pretty sexy.

I started with a safty pin (the spring steel works better than paper clips) what I did was clip it in two places with wire cutters so that I had a section about 4 inches long. Then I bent the last 3/8" to about 30 degrees in a vice. I did this all at home and it was perfectly fine for about a day getting the feel down.

Then I had access to a machine shop, nothing spectacular, just a couple drill presses, table saw, grinder, mill and jigsaw. So I took a couple hacksaw blades and ground them down with the instructions provided in the FAQ section. All I've made right now is a half diamond and a hook. I am thinking about doing some more exact work on the mill tomarow.

If you are making the hacksaw blade picks, don't forget to quench them frequently.

i like making stuff, and i cant order lockpicks, i told you that. if there was a store around that sold them, id be better off, but theres not. my best bet is making them. i didnt think there was anything wrong about making a wrench outta a nail. why not? i could use an allen wrench, but a nail was alot easier to file, keep in mind, i only had a file. i tried using a screwdriver, i bent it in the vice, and it snapped. i think my nail will work fine. my hacksaw pick looks close to some of the picks i saw online.
