VW Keys and FOBs

Postby mseifert » 10 Jun 2014 10:18

This may be in the wrong section for this, I am guessing that it is supposed to be the in Advance section .. Any who ..

A friend of mine owns a European Automotive Garage and is always being asked about replacing key for the cars he worked on. I am not an expert on automotive locks and keys so I pose the question to the forum..

I know that after I believe 2002 the keys for say a 2002 VW Jetta are hard to come by. So my question is, Is all the equipment consumables available to the average Joe to Make and decode keys and program key fobs.

I have looked up the Lishi Tools so I know you can decode..
When I finally leave this world.. Will someone please tell my wife what I have REALLY spent on locks ...

In theory you can find anything on the internet, but it would take a significant financial and time investment to get all the equipment and training. And unless he's getting at least 5 requests a day it would take a fairly long time before he made that money back. He would probably be better off contacting a local locksmith who already has the ability to do it and see if they will give him a small commission for sending customers their way.

Keys are easy to come by from your favorite locksmith distributor. You will need equipment to pull the pin number and program the key. On late model vehicles you need a way to write the new code to the key before you can pull the pin and program the key. Don't forget that you need a machine that can cut these.

So, in theory, yes the equipment is available. We have it and use it on a regular basis. Is it logical for a non-locksmith shop to make the investment? Probably not.
