Trim the blank to the highest cut?

Postby pcm81 » 7 Aug 2016 21:47

Very quickly tried this today and am wondering if anyone else does it as well.

The highest cut i had on the key was a 3. I made a depth (not space) key that matches a 3 and then cut the blank flat to 3 depth along its full length. Then added deeper cuts as needed. Theory is that the extra high spots are not needed and so the highest cut is the highest part of the key bitting. Goal was to reduce potential for the hooks that would need to be trimmed off later

Any one else does this sort of thing? Thoughts?

I occasionally will do this. It makes the key easier to go in and out and reduces wear.

So, if I understand this correctly you made 2 passes with the key .. First one was to cut the whole key blade down to a 3 then make a second pass and cut the actual bidding in the key ..
When I finally leave this world.. Will someone please tell my wife what I have REALLY spent on locks ...

I am code cutting using space and depth keys, not just duplicating. So, way more than just 2 passes, but you got the idea right.
