What do you mean by best place? In a vehicle, on a bench, or where to shop for one? If where to purchase, do you want new or used?

Also, it might help if we know in what part of the world you are located.

Look on Craigslist for a used Silca or Ilco duplicator. If buying new but don't want to spend a fortune, something like a mini-mite 008 is a nice small machine that will get you going.

To follow on a bit to what Gordon said, it would also help to know what you'd like to do and what types of systems you want to work on. There's a big difference between wanting to just be able to duplicate your own house keys vs. originate master key systems, and between pin tumbler keys vs. dimple keys vs. tubular keys vs. high security vs...

Dude, just how high are you? We have an entire Key Machine sub forum in the Locksmith Business area, but this is posted in Ask Beginner Hobby Lockpicking Questions? Why do we even bother having categories....

*rumble rumble*

I'll move this post for you...

I see simple used key machines like this for sale. As a hobbyist, it seems to be a good value if it's under $50. Looks simple--but I have no idea of the accuracy or durability, or even if there are standard cutting wheels that will interchange with it.
