Rare key machine

Postby cledry » 28 Nov 2013 0:29

I would wager nobody has a machine like this. Even Ilco had no knowledge of the machine.

What it is is the standard Ilco universal code machine, with a difference. It has a copy dog! This was one of the most accurate code machines in its day.

Ilco 2178 not sure of the last letter on the model #. Very accurate,quick and easy to change manufacturers. Some parts (discs,cutting wheels ) still available from Ilco or some suppliers. (Hawley?) the machine with the duplicator is pretty cool.

:drool:

That is a work of art. Have never seen a code machine with a copy dog. What time frame was this machine produced?

My wife would hang me if I started collecting key machines. :lol: Would have to get rid of my current machine if I got another one, though would if I could get a code machine at a decent price.

Thank you for sharing this machine with us, Cledry!

The patent for the Ilco disc machine was 1930. This may have been an early variant. I have never seen another with a copy dog but have seen many of these machines still in use. We used this one just for cutting SFIC Best keys by code and duplicating them.

Nope, never seen one.

How about this one?
My father bought it, but we've never used it as the motor is missing.
The motor is geared to the machine.
It will cut normal keys on the left and skeleton keys on the right.
It sits in our shop museum.

Those machines are too cool!! There are a few images of manuals on Laurence Simon's site but actually SEEING the old machines is even better :)

I am also one that likes these old machines. I have one of those highly geared behemoths.
I am missing that nice cast aluminum guard. This full sized machine was made by Keil & sons NY.
I know they were connected with Keil lock in Charlestown NH. I am not sure of the exact relationship.
Ilco bought out the remains of these companies. Ilco later produced just the left half of that machine
with the aluminum guard.
I also have a Keil Lock model #0 key machine that I restored. It was outfitted to be hand cranked or motor driven.
I will post pics here when I get a chance....stay tuned.

I think scooterpower is right, a Keil.
Walk by it almost everyday, but it escapes me.
I will have a closer look and get back to you.

Have a few others in the shop;

A Yale

Not an oldie, but one that got tons of use over the years. Not so much anymore.
Haven't seen any others used by other Locksmiths.
A Jensen Micro Dial Key Crafter;

Those old Yales are still quite common. The Jensen wasn't really very well built so not surprising they didn't get much use.
