Exit device help

Postby shutterstuff » 14 Mar 2016 21:12

OK, I have a brand I cannot find and 3 of my distributors have never heard of it either. The dogging key hole stripped out in the open position and I cannot get it to close so I can take it apart. My main question is parts. Will I be able to use another brand of internal parts so I can keep the cover as there are 7 other matching doors?

The damage shown was the janitor trying to work it. It now seems to just spin but I am going back with an easy out to see if that works.

Any better ideas?

Do you have some better photos of the entire device as well as the head and end cap? I only know of a couple of devices that share a dogging assy between brands so it is highly unlikely.

The building is about 40 years old I think.

Hard to tell from that distance but if the entire width of the bar is the push pad then it is probably an Adams Rite 8000 series. Easy to get parts for, hex dogging assy is 31-0265

It is the entire length. I will look that up and see if they match. Thanks!!!

Open the door, look at the end caps. Usually there is a clear sticker with some ID on it. However if when looking at the end you see two holes then it is Adams Rite. You will need to un-dog it somehow to take it apart. I would force something in and rotate it to un-dog. Then simply use a Phillips screwdriver through the holes in each end undo the captive screws and pull both end caps off then slide the middle piece off, you have to first go one direction and get it off one spring pad and then reverse direction to remove it. The dogging assy is just a screw that pushes it into place. I keep these on all our trucks as they go bad all the time and are inexpensive.

Your description of the rest of the lock is spot on except no sticker. I did not look at other doors though. I was able to loosen the two screws, but not get the cap off. I was going to try an easy out to get the dogging screw to turn but seem to have misplaced my set. I picked one up tonight and will head back out tomorrow. I looked up the part and they are cheap as you say, so I will get a couple and add them to my van.

Thanks again!

Any tricks to get the cover to slide off? How hard can I hit this thing?

I am glad you identified and are on the road to repairing that bar. I would like to offer a worst case fix for stripped out dogging sockets. Obviously this is not really cost efficient unless your drive becomes a signifcant factor or the client insists on an immediate solution. This fix will probably out last the rest of the exit bar.

Strip down the exit bar and remove the dogging part. By sight, determine what size bolt is less than the cross section of the dogging socket. I usually get the client's allen key also as a reference. Drill the hole wider and deeper for the correct thread tap. Tap threads to the bolt size. (Kawneer is 1/4-20) Now coat the hole with JB Weld and screw in tightly the exact length allen set screw. Reassemble everything and collect your money.

The allen screw will not wear out like the original mild steel one does. The client may have to occasionlly grind down 1/4" from the tip of the allen key to get fresh corners which will make it work better on all of the bars.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

The two screws holding on each side are about an inch long. I like to unscrew the top & the bottom and then you can start sliding the cover away,
on each side. Then the push bar part in the center will slide off & you can see the dogging mechanism

I have the end caps off. I could not get the cover to slide off while attached to the door, so I took it off. Now with some pretty serious bruit force, it still will not budge. I am about to resort to block of wood and hammer...

Not until it is un-dogged.
