Weird stories and occurrences

Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and talk about life as a locksmith. Trade stories of good and bad customers, general work day frustrations, any fun projects you worked on recently, or anything else you want to chat about with fellow locksmiths.

Weird stories and occurrences

Postby Jburgett2nd » 10 Apr 2015 20:49

So I've read through a good deal of threads and haven't found one dedicated to weird stories of locksmithing, strange customers, threatening situations, awkward moments etc. I'm sure everyone's got one! and I love reading them. I am planning to start up my business in October but I can share one with you from my days as a door to door salesman selling windows and doors.

So I worked for a local window and door company going door to door giving the pitch for free estimates and appraising how much it would cost to install the products if they were interested. No one likes cold call door to door sales people (not even me and I was one) so I had a long day of doors being shut being cursed at and told to get a real job etc. So It is dark out around 6 pm in winter and I go up to the final house on my route and this very very large hairy fat man opens the door towering over me...I had no clue what to do...so I just started going through my sales pitch, thank god he didn't want me to stick around to give an estimate. My supervisor got a good kick out of that story he couldn't believe I actually just went into the sales pitch instead of walking away.

When I was a mobile locksmith I had 2 guns pulled on me.

One was a guy who was being evicted from a commercial property. I kept picking the lock but the lock would not retract the bolt despite rotating the plug with a screw driver. I could see the bolt and it was not binding. Finally out steps the owner with a gun in my face. Then he noticed the property owner and directed his attention to him. He makes a phone call and his cronies come rough up the property owner. The only problem was that their car was very unique (high class, unique color). Idiots literally filled their car up at the gas station two blocks down the street after we called the cops. The cops had already arrested them before we finished the job.

The second time I was called to rekey a house. It was a women in her late 20s? Well she was rekeying her house because an abusive boyfriend. Her boyfriend pulls up mid rekey and wants to know who I am and why I'm there. Being a smartass 23-24 year old at the time, I point to my marked truck and say, "Take a guess". He pulls his gun out, takes aim, and tells me to leave "or else". I already had all the locks off the door at that point so I take them out to my truck to rekey them and call the cops. The fastest way to get the cops to any place is to tell them theres a man with a gun threatening to kill people. Within minutes my car and the house were surrounded by cops. Before they got there, however, he managed to rough up his girlfriend. Wrote up the bill and I believe her mother or aunt paid for it. For a while, I made sure to keep my gun on my at all times because my testimony help put that guy in jail and my information was public record. Not only did he collect battery charges from her, he collected a forcible felony charge from me.
