What's on your belt?

Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and talk about life as a locksmith. Trade stories of good and bad customers, general work day frustrations, any fun projects you worked on recently, or anything else you want to chat about with fellow locksmiths.

My daily carry ie my get outta(into?) trouble kit
Is in order of daily use
A phone
a torch
A leatherman multitool with bit set
And a bogata-esk set

Which i can do most things with
Started carrying after i was locked in(on the wrong side of door from tools)
With a cylindrical knobset that had a broken latch
(And in other news...Amazing what you can do with a butter knife )

Just a Leatherman Charge TTi with the bits. Their tiny screw driver pit is the perfect retention pin poker. I keep a 5/32" bit in it (for lever handle set screws on mortise locks - Sargent 8XXX, Best 40/45, etc.). In my pocket I keep a Fenix E11 flashlight.

I like to keep things light and subscribe to the "the more you know the less you need." I've been doing this long enough to know what I should bring with me given a specific call. I try not to carry anything else unless I think I'll need it. Then again, I don't have a work truck and I get around campus on a golf cart. Most of these buildings were built in the late 19th, early 20th century and don't have elevators. You learn quick that carrying 40-50 pounds of tools on each call isn't worth it.

Screw thread covers are the best (in my opinion) and they are really cheap on eBay. I have never found a leather bag/pouch or otherwise that checked all the boxes for my EDC tools. Almost everything I carry as a tool has a pointed/sharp tip and after having stabbed/cut through a 1/2 dozen expensive bags I happened to just stumble across these on a swing set build for a friend and the ones included fit perfectly over the tip of my Klein 11 in 1. They make them in a million sizes and they are so cheap you can buy a ton of them for nothing and just keep them on hand so when you lose them its no big deal. I have also used a bit of heat shrink tubing around some that were slightly loose to snug them up. Now they go on everything I can get them on.

Im not sure if this bit is in my head or not but I also feel like these keep my screwdrivers sharper for longer. I also had to etch what the screwdriver was into the back of the handle so I wouldn't have to pull the covers off to see what screwdriver it was (most of mine weren't labeled).

I ended up dropping a cap in the bottom and it works great:

I like the screw acp idea too and may get some of those as well for other tools.

They are great if you are prone to sticking tools in your pockets. Have so many jeans and slacks with a hole in the bottom of a pocket from a screwdriver or snips.

None - that one bit, which I use daily, is like a treasure to me now. I've carried it with me since 2011, when I started institutional work. I have replaced the Leatherman once, however. Nothing wrong with it but it had seen better days and the groves in the pliers were beginning to wear thin.
