Determined burglar

Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and talk about life as a locksmith. Trade stories of good and bad customers, general work day frustrations, any fun projects you worked on recently, or anything else you want to chat about with fellow locksmiths.

How many locksmiths do door installations? I don't and my mentor in 45 years didn't. Being a one man shop, I feel it is not something I want to tackle.

You really need 2 guys to handle door jobs safely. We do a lot of doors and pivots, continuous hinges, we also core drill doors etc. We also do door operators and work on sliding storefront doors. The work itself is pretty straightforward as long as you can use a measuring tape. We also do commercial door frames but lately we subcontract that out to a friend.

I do have a friend that I recommend for doors. I have done the hardware after a new door was installed. I replace closers and exit bars as needed. I have one that I cannot find parts for and I am about to post another thread and pictures for help.

I was thinking back to an experience several years ago. A new A/C unit was being installed in the server room at work. Just a couple of lines to be soldered together on the inside air handler. So the HVAC tech had his portable oxy-Acetelyne torch going, just for a couple of minutes and the siren starts going off, the siren that says the Halon system is about to dump. Yanked a wire out of the Halon system control panel to stop that from happening, but the point is the smoke detector did pick up a couple of minutes worth of a torch running and it was a fairly large room. I don't think the fire department would have minded responding to a call at the business in the original post, it is a wonder the idiot did not burn the building down.

pawn shops. I made several mistakes with my alarm and the red pepper gas deployed several times without my intention--really
clears out the shop too! Once you get a lungful of pepper spray you know all you really still want is fresh air and some cool water,
because by then your face is on fire too.

I remember seeing those advertised in Shotgun News back in the day. Apparently some old safes have tear gas inserts--safe techs probably have interesting experiences finding those.

Much of that 'old tear gas' has degraded into an actual poisonous substance, you can see pepper spray alarms by http://www.burglarbomb.com
