Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and talk about life as a locksmith. Trade stories of good and bad customers, general work day frustrations, any fun projects you worked on recently, or anything else you want to chat about with fellow locksmiths.

Restricted cylinders by manufacturer

Postby C locked » 18 Sep 2015 23:53

I would like to propose a new topic
So locksmith members can identify manufacturers
When
A database list
Of restricted profiles
By location and manufacturer
Ie
Bilock Australia. Australian lock company
Bilock ng Australia. Australian lock company
( known profile initials)

If anybody has already done such a list please
Post a redirection to existing list

Thanks

That would be one huge data base if it was compiled. There are thousands of profiles per the different brands here in north america. Lori, Schlage Everest, Primus, Medeco Biaxial, Keymark, Kaba Peaks, Scorpion, Assa, Instakey, Best Cormax, Abloy, Multi-Lok, Sargent XC, are Just the brands we deal with day to day. Each of these brands have hundreds if not thousands of keyways and side bars combinations. Im sure i missed dozens of other high security lock brands/ types. Im sure the guys from across the pond could name 4 times the amount of high security locks they deal with. (my hats off to them..)

Not too sure that compiling this information in one place is a good idea. In particular what is the use of Bilock information if you are not a Bilock dealer - presumably and hopefully there are no Bilock clippers, folders or blanks out there other than those supplied by Australian Lock.

I was simply using bilock as an example
I could have used abloy protec and the
Diamond - ruby profiles as the example

The reason was as i read thru older posts
I see "does anybody recognise this profile"
Do you know what blank? Who do i contact?

And i was hoping that this post could be a link,
A library of sorts

In the case of Best, CORMAX is available through distribution. There are no "dealers", per se.

Regardless, I don't see much use of this list. Locksmiths generally don't service restricted platforms if they aren't a dealer for that platform. They either pass it off to a dealer or offer to replace it. Most systems require dedicated equipment (pin kits, cutters) and parts (blanks, cylinders) and require buy-ins in order to procure equipment and parts.

And if they do decide to service it, they're not going to look for such a list. They're going to be working with the manufacturer and/or the manufacturer's local rep to make sense of keys, cylinders, etc. or pass that responsibility off onto the customer.

When I worked for a locksmith company, we assumed control of existing Schlage Primus systems for two very large commercial buildings in Atlanta. We weren't a Primus dealer and the owner wasn't interested in becoming one. The agreement with the real-estate company was that they would provide the restricted parts and we would only charge for labor.

Are you sure locksmiths are the ones asking?

I would hope that most locksmiths contact the manufacturer's local rep for such a question and not the Internet. If they don't know who to contact, their vendor(s) do/does at the very least.

I have a very good relationship with a major Medeco dealer in town, for example. If I have a question about a Medeco product, I call him. I know many locksmiths have this relationship with other locksmiths. It's not at all uncommon in Atlanta to be involved on an email chain or phone conversation where a locksmith is trying to refer a customer that called them to the company that originally installed or serviced a restricted platform. This is very common when a new real estate company assumes control of a property.
