Today I went to install a Marks panic bar and a Kaba Eplex on a 4 5/8" thick freezer door. They don't make a spindle this long so I welded two together, no biggie. They don't offer 12-24 screws in long lengths locally so I used the lathe to make the screws for the Kaba. Then we plate the inside of the door with 1/8" aluminium to spread the load. So we are on the job, lock all installed on the door our tech said was to get the lock. Just getting ready to screw the strike plate on when the customer comes and informs us that we are doing the wrong door! In the end we ended up removing the door which weighed well over 300 pounds because it was full of water, swapping it with the one on the other end of the warehouse that we were apparently supposed to do. Not a great day, but in the end it all worked out.

Feel for you, Cledry. Hope tomorrow is better for you.

That must've been quite the day. Good job, Cledry. Could I ask a question about the bottom picture? My question is what the hardware at the bottom of the door does, is that a door closer? Thanks, in advance!

Que sera'. Looks like a really good install though!
Does the Eplex have a bypass key?
I just hate customers that you have to nag just to get clear instructions about what they really want. Seems like they just want you to screw up so they will have something to correct.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

Yes, the thing on the bottom is the closer.

Thanks, we do a lot of these freezer door installs so have them perfected almost. If I could just find 4" long 12-24 screws I would be much happier. The Eplex does have a Schlage keyway 6 pin cylinder for bypass, but it is under a little cover. It wasn't the customer's fault really, the tech that looked at the job told myself and the other installer the wrong door!

We aren't exactly cheap to begin with. We charged a little over $600 for the install, plus parts. It takes 2 men about 2 hours. Not the customer's fault this time.

Just was a convenient place to shove some trash until I finished working.
