Old Gu multipoint

Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and talk about life as a locksmith. Trade stories of good and bad customers, general work day frustrations, any fun projects you worked on recently, or anything else you want to chat about with fellow locksmiths.

Old Gu multipoint

Postby Poolsharks1 » 18 Nov 2015 12:44

I was out at a job today which had a broken old style 40 mm GU gearbox. I searched all the main suppliers and none had that backset only 30mm and 35mm.
Anyway im having to replace the whole strip. Old strip had a latch and deadbolt with 2 small tounge hooks (one top and one bottom). The closest strip i could find was the gu tripact 40mm backset. Problem is the strip is 305mm longer than the old one. Does anyone know if its ok to cut them down - I.E will affect any of the hooks?
Asked the specials department at aldridges but they didn't want to commit. Gave me Gu number, but low and behold no one from technical was in!

Cheers

I have replaced several of the Hoppes gearboxes and nobody will ever say whether or not it is OK to cut the strip.
I have so far escaped having to cut it, but there is no reason why not, as long as you have the patience to redrill
the holes the top latch goes into. I replaced one that originally had the two tongues, all the company had was a
model with the tongues & the top & bottom rods and that was a bit of extra work--also one of the tongues didn't
line up correctly, more fun grinding a new hole for it to latch into...You can do it, it just takes time
